After writing my bachelor thesis in the area of network operations, I am now continuing my journey in this field. I continue to work mostly as a software developer but will also broaden my horizon in the network operations department and gain new knowledge and skills.

As a software developer for DE-CIX, I work on automating the configuration of complex networking topologies. My team and I are working on implementing a software stack that is able to receive massages from a massage broker, parse them, create a diff between the configuration on the routers and the requested change using YANG models, and then apply it in a secure manner.While writing code mostly in Python for this, I come across a wide variety of tools to support my day-to-day business, such as Terraform, Kubernetes, Microsoft Azure, Apache Kafka, Gitlab CI/CD, to name a few.

My bachelor thesis was being developed in cooperation with DE-CIX and is concerned with automatically generating information-rich graphs from text-based information sources, keeping them up-to-date and making them available to employees of DE-CIX. The aim was to develop an abstract and interactive representation of the DE-CIX network, which depicts the routers, locations and regions involved as well as their connections to each other.This goal is achieved in the scope of the thesis at hand: a series of interactive and interconnected graphs are created, which can be accessed within the company and show the different components of the network and their relationships to each other. Furthermore, these graphs show additional details such as names, locations, coordinates, metrics, IP addresses and further links at the user’s request. The result of this work enables DE-CIX employees to obtain a graphical overview of their own network – in addition to the existing text-based sources – and thus expand their understanding of it. With this knowledge, network expansions can be better planned and disruptions can be resolved more quickly and efficiently.„The maps created make everyday network operations easier by illustrating the topology and showing dependencies. I started my career at AB+M when I was 17 years old, right after I finished high school and before I started studying computer science. In this internship I developed a web-application for internal uses which communicated a VM on a backend server I built and maintained. It controlled an internal tool which was used to collect data from customers to a given problem and stored them in a central place for my employees to access and analyze.This tool was able to standardize, automate and speed up a process which was done multiple times a day from typically about ten to fifteen minutes to a quick query which finished in about 20 seconds and could be ran in the background.
