Cyclist And Composter

Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand

Kaicycle provides an electric-bicycle-powered food waste collection service for offices and households in central Wellington. The difference? We turn this useful resource into gorgeous compost instead of trapping it in the landfill. We then use the compost on the Kaicycle Urban Farm to regenerate the land (a previously underused park) and grow organic, nutrient-dense food for donation and sale to the local community. Kaicycle champion local and sustainable food systems, community education and kaitiakitanga. We seek to show that urban composting is feasible and can be a broader solution in the future with a whole host of benefits—environmental, social, and economic. My work involves collecting food waste (cycling!), turning compost, and on a voluntary basis working on long-term projects to expand the capabilities of KaiCycle and improve the Urban Farm.

Waste Management Consultant - University Honours Project

Auckland, New Zealand

For my university honours project, I provided Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) with a quantitative analysis of its current waste generation and management systems. At the time ADHB management was working to develop a sustainability strategy for which a complete understanding of current waste streams was essential. To inform this strategy my work looked at waste generation from procurement through to final disposal of the different waste streams (some unique to healthcare), analysing quantities, costs, energy expenditure and environmental impact. Once completed, I continued by looking into opportunities for improvements in these areas through alternative waste processing methods, different procurement options and waste education programmes. A significant part of the project involved research into alternative waste processing technologies, national and overseas legislation on waste management, resource management in the healthcare sector and leading waste and sustainability strategies. The final report presented to ADHB provided a clear picture of quantities, costs and processing methods of current waste streams. Several opportunities for cost savings and reducing environmental impact were identified, and changes were recommended to be carried out under the umbrella of the new sustainability strategy.

University Student

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare

As part of a university paper, I worked in a team with three other university students on a 3-month project with an industry partner. The industry partner we were assigned was Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (F&P H). For our project, we were tasked with isolating the faults that were contributing to erroneous measurements on a measurement device being operated by a large group of assembly workers. This involved observing a large number of workers to find faults in the SOP as well as extensive geometric and mechanical analysis of the measurement device to find defects inherent in the customised measurement equipment. All our conclusions had to be supported by statistical analysis, which was done using R. The outcome of our project was a report and presentation clearly explaining our findings and recommendations to engineers at F&P H.

Engineering Student Intern

Friedrichshafen, Baden Württemberg, Germany

I supported the R&D team developing and analysing the finite element mesh (FEM) models for new gear designs. My day-to-day work involved taking these models and using the FEMFAT software to perform fatigue analysis of the designs. Given FEM models, I would find the damage (Miner’s theory) at critical locations on the gear, given the required number of stress cycles for a range of input torques. The results would then be prepared for weekly meetings with the other design teams to discuss improvements such as new materials, surface treatments or changes to the gear design. Due to my fluency in both German and English, I was also tasked with translating technical documents for company branches and partners in the U.S.A

Dec 2014 - Feb 2015

Engineering Student Intern

Kawerau, Bay Of Plenty, New Zealand

I was primarily responsible for supporting the maintenance systems engineer on site. This involved updating site safety maps, signs and the SAP system. I was also required to create work orders for the parts of a large new machine. With this work, I became very proficient at using Microsoft Excel. Through working in an industrial setting and being involved with maintaining safety systems, I became very aware of Health & Safety on site and identifying potential hazards in a factory setting.I also spent a lot of time isolating faults on the newly installed automated product handling lines and presenting solution recommendations to the engineering team working in this area. Working on several projects at once taught me good time management and prioritization in the workplace.
