Therefore there is a great demand for faster and smaller data storage. One solution could be magneto optical read and write devices, where ultra short laser pulses are used to set the magnetization direction of a data bit. We are investigating the fundamentals of the switching process at timescales more than 1000 times faster than today magnetic hard drives.
