PhD title : "Statistical analysis of the spatial and temporal variability of polarimetric weather radar signals in the Alps"Tasks of this position include:- Scientific research and outreach- Data analysis (weather radar and in-situ measurements), programming (Python, Matlab, working in Unix environments), set-up of a spatial data base (PostGIS, SQL)- Participation in scientific measurement campaign in complex terrain (instrument set-up, responsible for the maintenance and running of X-band polarimetric radar)- Teaching assistant activities (Remote Sensing, Spatial statistics and analysis, Probabilités et statistique (MATH))Abstract of work:In the Alpine context, the accurate estimation of precipitation quantities at the ground level by weather radar is challenged by the influence of complex terrain causing partial or total beam blocking. Measurements made aloft are therefore often extrapolated to the ground level, but these corrections are complicated by the vertical change of the radar echo. This is caused by changes in hydrometeor size and phase. In order to increase the availability of radar information, MeteoSwiss has recently upgraded and extended its weather radar network with dual polarisation technology and two radars located at high altitudes (~3000 m asl). These developments pose new challenges to the extrapolation of high-altitude measurements, but also provide the opportunity to use polarimetric radar variables for the improvement of quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE).
