In a primarily administrative role, I was employed to relieve our underwriters of repetitious tasks, to ensure that their time was spent underwriting. Principally, I aimed to improve the team’s overall efficiencies. I did so whilst further refining my knowledge of the (re)insurance industry, its practices, and Construction & Engineering as a line of business (CAR, CECR & EAR).Typically, my tasks included:• Managing the teams underwriting mailbox. • Filing & processing any subsequent endorsements or placement slips.• Data entry into Axis’ underwriting systems in a timely manner.• Updating Axis’ underwriting systems with mid-term policy changes.• Liaising with underwriters to ensure the correct interpretation of their data, for accuracy and completeness.• Ensuring that underwriting files are complete and accurate. This included obtaining any outstanding info from the broker or underwriter in preparation for audit / peer review• Ensuring that all Axis led slips were sent to contract certainty to be checked. Any follow up actions were forwarded to both the underwriter & broker to be actioned in a timely fashion.• Assisting the credit control team in investigating outstanding premiums due, resolving queries, and managing & controlling aged debt. Again, this included liaising with brokers directly.• Ensuring that peer reviews were completed for every (bound) open market risk. This included preparing the peer review template for every open market risk.• Liaising with internal Axis teams, at the behest of the underwriter (credit control, claims, contract certainty, IT etc.)• Building broker relationships, where possible. • Further developing my knowledge of the class of business and the accounts written.

Alongside sizable commercial & operational teams, I was involved in a project which redesigned & extended two existing aircraft parking aprons, as well as constructing several multi-purpose buildings for the United States Air Force at RAF Lakenheath. As of August 2021, the value of the project had eclipsed GBP 300,000,000.00. The project allowed me to see first hand, the completion of earthworks, deep drainage, heavy civil engineering, paving, utilities & infrastructure, as well as typical four-wall construction.My role on the project specifically included:• Drafting subcontracts, as well as addendums to (i.e. scopes of work).• Managing the projects largest earthworks, groundworks & deep drainage package, totaling GBP 4,800,000.00.• Negotiating, assessing & certifying monthly payments.• Managing any subcontract change.• Issuing formal notices in accordance with the Main Contract (N.E.C).• Taking daily records to manage on site costs, as well as change.• Liaising daily with the onsite operations team. Again, to manage cost & change.• Preparing and delivering scope clarification presentations to the projects supply chain.• Comparing invitations to tender (ITTs) on their return.• Reporting financially at the close of every calendar month.• Forecasting the liabilities (e.g., project / subcontract expenditure) for the following month.

Officially, my first venture into commercial construction, working for a reputable contractor recognised as an industry leader in the civil engineering space. During my time in the role, I was involved in a hugely successful project remodeling infrastructure, as well as redeveloping & extending Berth 9 at The Port of Felixstowe. As well as basic infrastructure works, the project was inclusive of wet works (tubular piling, sheet piling & dredging), heavy earthworks & paving.My role was inclusive of:• Record keeping & generally maintaining a construction site diary. Both written & photographic evidence of progress on site. • Liaising with on-site supervision, for progress & subcontractor updates.• General subcontractor management.• Quantity take-offs.• Measurement. Both manually & electronically.• Use of both AutoCAD & Bluebeam software.• Introduction to the FIDIC (Fédération Internationale Des Ingénieurs-Conseils) suite of contracts

In late 2016, I made my start in the construction industry. My first year was spent working as a trainee setting-out engineer. My time was split across two infrastructure projects in Essex & Hertfordshire. On both projects, I was primarily tasked with setting out deep drainage, services, pavements & roads. Once installed, I would survey the constructed works and updated the AutoCAD models for the end users.
