Hi, I am Ferdane, a 5th-grade medical student from Istanbul, Turkey. After losing my grandmother to Alzheimer's, my interest in science focused on neurocognitive disorders, dementia, and neuroscience. So far, I have had research internships in various laboratories at my home university and abroad on multiple topics. I did a three-month fully sponsored internship in the summer of 2022 in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Basel, Switzerland. My project was about the relationship between different lesion types and cortical thickness in Multiple Sclerosis patients.For the summer of 2023, as a part of the AMGEN Program, I did another research project about the model building of a complex protein known as the gamma-tubulin ring complex in the Department of Biophysics, ETH Zurich. I presented my results at the European Amgen Symposium at Cambridge University.I was selected for the Turkish national team during high school and joined the International Chemistry Olympiads. I won a silver medal in IChO 2019 in Paris, France, and a bronze medal in IMChO 2019 in St. Petersburg, Russia. I graduated as the top student from my science high school and am currently the top student in my English medicine program. Still, apart from my academic studies, I am the founding president of the Fine Arts Club in my faculty and engaged in various art forms, including oil painting and portrait drawing. With our team, we organize weekly oil painting, drawing, and ceramics workshops in our faculty, a monthly literature journal written by students, and museum and art gallery visits to increase interest in art and self-awareness among the med students by providing them a place to express themselves freely. I also completed my first-ever half marathon in April 2023 and am preparing for a full one.I enjoy and excel in teaching, as I can tell from my experiences as a volunteer tutor for high schoolers from low socioeconomic classes and my faculty classmates. Thus, I plan to be an academician to combine my enthusiasm for scientific research and educating the younger generations.
