Connolly Wellingham is an emerging architectural design and conservation studio based in the south west of England with a commitment to the highest standards of contemporary design in historic, urban and rural environments, with particular expertise in the sensitive adaptation and reuse of significant and listed buildings. I joined FCB Studios in 2009. Prior to this I worked with Martin Stancliffe Architects on a number of large scale architectural conservation projects across the country. It was here that my early interest in architectural repair and reuse was nurtured. My principal focus at MSA was on the programme of works at St. Paul's Cathedral- its largest phase of repair and reordering since completion in the early 18th century. I undertook my architecture degree at Glasgow School of Art, before completing my Diploma at London Metropolitan University. My final thesis was selected as a stand out project by BD Magazine. I went on to work with ZMM Architects on the award winning Watts Gallery in Guildford, Surrey. In 2008 I undertook the SPAB's Lethaby Scholarship, furthering my understanding of historic architecture and conservation. That year, I also won first prize in the Georgian Group's Architectural Drawing Competition, presented by HRH The Prince of Wales. I lecture and tutor across the country on vernacular architecture and new architecture in sensitive settings.I am currently focusing on Bath Abbey's Footprint Project. Footprint received £10.5m in support from the Heritage Lottery Fund through 2015. This large scale package of works looks to repair and reorder the Grade I listed Abbey building, whilst providing facilities and services that will serve the Abbey as the heart of the World Heritage City for future generations. Through 2016 we will be working through the technical design and tender stages of Footprint- currently the Church of England's largest construction project.

Since 1930 the SPAB has offered the Letharby Scholarship to support young architects, surveyors and engineers with a passion for conservation. Each year the Scholars travel the length of the country together for nine months, making site visits and meeting expert craftspeople and architects working in building conservation. SPAB Scholars are now among the leading conservation experts in the UK, looking after some of the foremost buildings in Britain. Scholars observe and experience traditional techniques and sympathetic repair in situ and will visit structures of every age, size and style. The site visits can range from brickworks to cathedrals to garden grottoes. SPAB favours a hands-on approach and timber framing, masonry, lime pointing and blacksmithing are just some of the crafts the Scholars may try. Through these experiences each Scholar will develop their own appreciation of our philosophy of conservative repair.
