About Ferial Haffajee

I am a multi-award-winning South African editor and journalist and a global moderator as well as a regular speaker and analyst. Right now, I am an Associate Editor at the leading global news site, Daily Maverick. (www.dailymaverick.co.za) which is widely recognised as one of the world's leading media innovators. it is a splendid place to be. Previously, I was editor-in-chief at the Mail&Guardian and City Press, where teams I have worked with won numerous investigative and other journalism awards. I am regular analyst and commentator on radio, television and elsewhere. One of the roles I enjoy most is as a global moderator largely with the African Leadership Initiative, a partner of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. I am a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative, a network of enlightened leaders who do extraordinary work. I am on the advisory board of the Open Society’s Programme for Independent Journalism and I have previously been a board member of the World Editors Forum and the Global Editors Network. I have won numerous awards for journalism and for support of media freedom including a Committee for the Projection of Journalism’s International Press Freedom Hero award in 2015 and the Naspers Phil Weber award in 2013 – the global tech company’s highest internal honour. Previously, Ferial was chairperson of the South African National Editors Forum and chairperson of the CNN/Multichoice African Journalist of the Year Awards. I have published a best-selling book called “What if there were no whites in South Africa” and in 2017 was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Free State.

It had always been my dream to be the editor of this legendary South African title and my time there was enjoyable and enriching. My brief was to create a continental read which we achieved with regular editions published in different African capitals while we also started Voices of Africa - an exciting regular set of stories of ordinary life on our continent. My mission has always been to break the mould of who is recognised as a leader and to highlight the extraordinary talents of more South Africans than the meta-narrative highlighted. At the Mail&Guardian, I conceived and edited, with our talented team, the well-known "100 Young South Africans you must take to lunch" and the Annual Book of South African Women.
