My name is Fernando Betancourt, I’m an associate veterinarian working for GoodVets at the Downtown Brooklyn location. Previously, worked strictly overnight at Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) and underwent a one-year internship at Veterinary Emergency Referral Group (VERG) at Brooklyn, NY. I graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Animal and Veterinary Science from the University of Vermont (UVM). I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I worked as a laboratory technician in Dr. Stephanie McKay's Lab were our main focus was epigenetic work with cattle. As an undergraduate I had the opportunity to be part of the Cooperative for Real Education in Agricultural Management (C.R.E.A.M.) program from UVM, which is a student-run dairy farm and had the chance to travel abroad to South Africa to work with Dr. Peter Rogers wildlife veterinarian, both of these experiences forever changed me as an animal science student. As a veterinary student, I was focused on mixed animal practice with interest in conservation medicine. I had the privileged to work with the Jane Goodall Institute at Tchimpounga Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo through the Engaged Cornell program led by Dr. Robin Radcliffe. This opportunity allowed me to promote continued conservation efforts, learn about disease surveillance, and practice my clinical skills. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has propelled me to pursue other projects and experiences, such as working at the San Francisco Zoo and White Oak Conservation Center. On my continual pursuit of veterinary and conservation medicine, I’m looking forward to put into practice my skills and knowledge acquired throughout the years.
