Visiting Scholar

Research project supervised by Dr. Milena Popovic, regarding RNA-mineral interactions and its implications to the origin of life on Earth and beyond

Phd Student

São Paulo, Brazil

Investigation of carbonate precipitation induced by bacteria regarding the biogenicity of minerals. The assessment of mineral biosignatures can contribute to studies of the evolution of life on Earth and to help investigate if life has ever started in other planetary bodies. This project aims to support biogenic mineral databases and to help improve life-detection protocols and techniques for the astrobiology and geobiology scientific community.

Visiting Phd Student

Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States

Doing part of my PhD research in the Experimental Geobiology Lab supervised by Dr. Tanja Bosak (Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences). My work aims to support the comprehension of co-evolution of life on Earth and potentially applying in the search for biosignatures on Mars. This research includes testing the microbial precipitation of carbonate minerals in hypersaline conditions in order to identify and characterize mineral phases, precipitate morphologies and chemical composition.

Interactions between mineral surfaces and organic molecules are thought to have played key roles in the emergence of life. Mineral surfaces have been shown to adsorb, concentrate, protect, and oligomerize ribonucleic acids (RNA). But little is known about the sequence and structure dependence of RNA-mineral interactions. We will analyze data sets from high-throughput sequencing of RNA populations exposed to redox-active minerals.
