About Fernando Murillo

I developed my career as an architect, firstly, and urban-regional planner, later working in designing and building housing projects in different provinces of Argentina. I focus on affordable housing and slum upgrading from early 90s and progressively get involved in urban and regional planning in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. I lead a team of urban planners in charge of developing the master plan of Gaza, Khan Younis and Rafah, as well as Bethlehem, Beit Jalah and Beit Sahur in Palestine. Also, in the same country I design and build two neighborhoods in Khan Younis and Rafah housing 12,000 units for refugees whose shelters were destroyed during military incursions. I also practice the profession in various roles extensively in Sudan and South Sudan, Nigeria, Mozambique, Zambia, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Bolivia. Between 2017/8 I joint the World Bank as Task Team Leader in charge of urban projects in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Palestine. I lead the techncal assistance in charge of formulating the national urban integration program in Argentina (2018/9) and Bolivia (2023 under CIPEC contract) as senior consultant hired by the Interamerican Development Bank (2018/9). I coordinate UN Habitat technical assistance programme in México, in the context of "Tren Maya", a 1500 km railway in the Yucatan peninsula, developing renewable plans and new cities in the context of updating master and regional plans. My directorship at the University of Buenos Aires aligns with my endeavor to disseminate knowledge and catalyze positive change through urban and regional planning education. It's a synergy of academia and practical application, where we facilitate municipalities in crafting master plans and advance affordable housing, thus translating theoretical frameworks into tangible community upliftment. I am currently program coordinator of UN Habitat in Argentina and serve as human settlement officer in Saudi Arabia
