    ERT is an Automotive Supplier. I was in charge of a Strategic Agenda of Innovation, integrating the strategies, narratives and plans across a broad spectrum of innovation priorities. I established an approach of industrial innovation based on strategic marketing and strategic alliances, and networking with creative industries. My main research interest explored models that incorporate flexible electronics into flexible materials for the application of ICTs and Material Intelligence concerning Smart Comfort Systems and Smart Assisted Driving. Besides R&D on Smart Textiles and cooperation with designers, I also worked on R&D under Bionic concepts and concepts of re-use of materials for the Circular Economy. This way of organizing and managing innovation was behind the recognition of ERT as the winner of the most prestigious innovation prize in Portugal in 2016, awarded by COTEC a Business Association for Innovation, and delivered by its honorary president, the President of the Portuguese Republic.

    The evolution on sciences is creating new opportunities for new materials in order to react to external influences, like extreme temperature, humidity, chemicals and bacterial, light, radiation, fire and electrical discharges, for multifunctional clothing manufacture, used in sports, work and protection. This article intends to highlight the breakthrough in recent years, in terms of advanced materials in sports, improving comfort, improving efficiency, being lighter, producing positive impacts in athletes’ performance. Athlete’s performance is defined by issues like their physical and physiological condition, but also depends on his/her equipment. Therefore, sports clothing must be designed in order to promote comfort and deal with large amounts of perspiration release during competition. This article highlights the role of textile materials on sports clothing, as advanced materials contributing to improve physiological performance, and also the role of suitable sports clothing, focusing in particular on thermal stress.Key-Words: Intelligent textiles, multifunctional clothing. Garments and perspiration, textiles and UV protection, textiles and IR radiation, thermal stress.
