Study on the best method of passivation of stainless steel in the context of my Bachelor engineering degree. Problem: How can we restore aesthetic appearance of a stainless steel part that has been welded? - Understanding the phenomenon of passivation of stainless steel (Chemistry) and the problems associated with welds. Results: - Choice 1: Pickling with hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid (to remove oxidation), followed by passivation with nitric acid - Choice 2: TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding eliminates the cleaning step, to gain in safety, productivity, cost, and work time. No need for scouring or passivation if the operation is well done. The use of acids is therefore avoided.
