WISEST exists to empower women in the sciences, engineering and technology, and to strengthen and encourage diversity in these fields. Since 1982, WISEST has been achieving this vision by promoting the participation of under-represented groups through education, outreach and mentorship, with an added focus on rural and Indigenous students. As the WISEST Team Lead, I am responsible for leading the WISEST staff and a network of over 600 volunteers in the planning and delivery of a diverse set of high calibre educational programs designed to encourage more young women to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology. Among its key programs are the annual Summer Research Program (SRP), which provides research opportunities for 40 to 50 Grade 11 students; the annual Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Conference, which provides 200 high school students with the opportunity to learn more about studies and careers in the SET fields; the annual Choices Conference for 600 Grade 6 students and their teachers; and Tales from the Science Buffalo, a series of interactive presentations honouring Aboriginal Ways of Knowing which are delivered in Grade 6 classrooms throughout the school year. WISEST also facilitates mentoring opportunities for students and collaborates with other science outreach groups both on and off campus. As Team Lead, I manage the entire coordination process for these and other programs and activities, including program development, fundraising, registration, participant placements, volunteer management, marketing and communication, program evaluation and reporting.
