I provide consultancy services for the system architecture and design of complex embedded systems to meet fast-moving specifications. I specialize in the effective use of COTS devices and technologies in high-availability, mission-critical systems. Maintaining a traceable association between the hierarchy of atomic requirements and the features of a feasible system architecture even while both requirements and constraints are in flux often values the versatile designs that I create.

Advised on the application of COTS x86 architecture microprocessors and other commercial technologies to avionics products and identified cost savings by identifying, quantifying and then mitigating deficiencies in those commercial elements.● Advised an RFP-compliant technical bid for the F-35’s Panoramic Cockpit Display (PCD, TR3) by executing a trade-study which modeled, benchmarked, and identified the optimal flight and mission compute microprocessor against simulated performance needs. The solution achieved functionality, cost, SWaP, availability, manufacturability, and performance targets.● Architected a multi-aircraft flexible stores management system (SMS) which exceeded all targets while maintaining backward and forward compatibility with aircraft evolution, both fixed-wing and rotary-wing.● Identified and championed a virtualized cloud-resident avionics package using mature rotary-wing avionics and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to support a DARPA activity promoting formal security methods in complex systems.

An adviser to the US aerospace and defense community.● Provided suitability analysis of x86 processors for mission and flight computers, advising on broader semiconductor industry constraints affecting defense applications for Rockwell Collins (contract-to-hire).● Created a market analysis and business plan for a US Prime Contractor to guide their entry as a defense-industry semiconductor vendor/distributor of adapted x86 microprocessors and other commercial technologies.

Worked at the technical interface between Intel's embedded group (IOTG) and their Public Sector customers, including defense, aerospace, and other safety-critical segments. Advised solutions and best practices to customers, coordinated Intel's product and technology roadmaps, and led special programs when gaps were identified. The single point of contact for all Mil / Aero and Government Agency (MAG) applications for Intel's products.● Maintained relationships with the engineering principals at the US prime contractors. Used a fine-detail understanding of Intel's products to better address unique and critical applications and formulated adapted x86 microprocessor products to better meet per-program defense solution needs.● Defined the IOTG / MAG growth strategy as it related to Public Sector customers, identified technology gaps, and advised programs to address those gaps. Achieved silicon, solutions and services revenue growth of 40% to $136M (2015), target $148M (2016), and developed a strategy to exceed the 5-year segment revenue target of $900M. ● Re-evaluated Intel's intrinsic and near-term device capabilities with many international avionics providers, the FAA, and EASA. Immutable device behaviors around soft-error rates, reliability, and out-of-specification response were better understood against the needs of DAL A, B-E. Identified DO-254, DO-178, ISO 26262, IEC 61508 aspects and gaps. Coordinated the various functional safety needs of Aerospace, Defense, Automotive, and Industrial segment customers and instigated programs to meet those needs.● Proponent that the needs of the military and aerospace segments, while of comparatively low-volume, were early indicators for the needs of many future IOT applications. Security methodologies, availability, and safety-critical responses would become more important the closer and more essential IOT compute became to human use. Served as the subject matter expert (SME) for those aspects to other IOT segments.

Embedded with the Sales & Marketing Group as a security technology subject matter expert (SME) to advise the tier-1 client and server OEMs on device and network security technology adoption. I became the technology translator to strip away the internal techno-babble of the 'how' and express it as the 'why' to the large system OEMs.● Created multi-million dollar customer ‘pull’ for Intel’s products by guiding tier-1 OEMs to productize fundamental silicon and firmware technologies as value-add features.

Authored and communicated best practices for the design of network and data security appliances to technologists and leadership at tier-1 network appliance providers and functioned as a System Design proxy for Intel's internal developers.● Provided system architecture advice to tier-1 security appliance developers which increased the network appliance (security appliance) segment to >$50M in annual silicon-sales revenue.● Functioned as a Product Manager to define future Intel solutions: hardware, firmware, and software. Tenaciously represented customers’ needs to Intel’s roadmaps. Formulated competitive product analyses and communicated appropriately to all levels of business up to GM / SVP.● Functioned as a System Architect to define the Content Processing Module (CPM) which accelerated advanced encryption, compression and RegEx pattern-matching in Intel’s QuickAssist framework. Negotiated performance bands between key multinational customers and internal development constraints.

Design Architect for the definition and realization of an optical access multiplexor, the UE9000. The UE9000 spawned international variants at the heart of Nortel’s VoIP and data access portfolio. Adapted and promoted the UE9000 architecture as a GR-303 trunk-side gateway to realize manufacturing, inventory, product support and operational savings for both Nortel and their customers. Developed a data architecture for Nortel Networks’ gigabit FTTH IP-PON, including security, authentication, and many other contemporary commercial and consumer network gateway features .

Invited to join a team of talented Nortel Network and Daimler-Benz Aerospace engineers at the inception of a joint venture to address the needs of Western and Central European telecom providers.Worked at the fusion of wireline and GSM mobile technologies such that PBX CENTREX services were provided over individual ISDN-BA connections, which led to a high-value patent for GSM picocell basestations. Fast-tracked North American and UK access network product adaptations for the recently deregulated local markets, including FTTC, FTTH PON systems, to satisfy rapid build-out by multiple customers..

Embedded design and later system architect roles for combined voice & data access products to address the needs of large European service providers. Designed the architecturs of products which provided POTS, ISDN, broadband, and legacy services with leading SDH / SONET, PDH, ATM, MPLS, Ethernet, and electro-optical back-haul connections, including Passive Optical Networks, PON. Satisfied national and European regulatory requirements for availability and network management while exceeding ITU recommendations for functionality.
