As per Feb 2020, I have focused my support to the Irish Bioeconomy Foundation cluster on European activities including support advocacy, fundraising, networking and overall promotion of the Irish Bioeconomy ecosystems and IBF members.
As per April 2019, within the context of the BioBased Industries Joint Undertaking (EU) project “ICT-BIOCHAIN - ICT Tools in Efficient Biomass Supply Chains for Sustainable Chemical Production” I have been asked, in my capacity of IBF CEO, to also take over the role of Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) Manager within the Irish Bioeconomy Model Demonstrator Region. The DIH aims to examine opportunities for ICT, IoT and Industry 4.0. to increase the efficiency of high potential value biomass supply chains. As a Hub manager, my main tasks and actions will be to oversee the development of Hub activities and Liaising with the regional stakeholders to deliver project activities and develop cross-national initiatives, especially in collaboration with other European Digital Innovation Hubs.

ETH/UZH BUSS: international Biology Undergraduate Summer School.During the two months I spent at the Institut für Molekularbiologie (UZH), Zurich, my main research objective was the study of some interesting aspects of epigenetic regulation, with special attention to chromatin modification. Chromatin modification is a very important mechanism of gene expression regulation. One class of enzymes involved in this process is the family of SET domain containing histone methyltransferase (HMTase) enzymes, which are highly conserved in evolution from yeast to man. The yeast Set1 complex methylates histon 3 on its lysine 4 (H3K4) and this modification is a landmark for actively transcribed chromatin. In our current research we identified a H3K4 mimicking domain in the Set1/c corepressor protein Nrm1. This domain was shown to directly mediate the interaction of Nrm1 with two important cellular complexes: both Set1c and Cdc20/APC complex. This work aimed to identify proteins also containing an H3K4 mimicking domain by in silico screening of the yeast proteome. Five candidates proteins were then tested for interaction with Cdc20. We could show that the Yjr142w, a protein of unknown function was able bind Cdc20 suggesting a cell cycle dependant regulation of Yjr142w by the APC. The work assigned to me was, first, the extraction of cellular mRNA M. grisea, then its reverse-transcribed into cDNA, as well as assembly and amplification via PCR. This was followed by the cloning of the sequence obtained in an E. coli expression vector, the transformation of a strain suitable for its production, as well as a subsequent phase of selection of the correct recombinant.
