Bill Fienup was born and raised in St. Louis Missouri. He earned his BSME and MSME in Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After 7 years of product design consulting for Insight and IDEO, he has now shifted focus towards his startup companies. Inspired by the challenges of developing hardware, Bill co-founded mHUB, a manufacturing innovation hub for entrepreneurs developing products. mHUB's 1,200 community members have access to $6 million of prototyping equipment and resources, industry experts and mentors as well as a large manufacturing network to help startups define, develop, and deliver products. Members have access to a machine shop, electronics lab, digital fabrication studio, and an office environment to operate a business. Bill’s reputation as a thought leader extends beyond Chicago. He was named to Crain’s Chicago Business 40 Under 40 in 2018 and featured in Newcity's Design 50: Who Shapes Chicago 2019. In addition to being a repeat visitor to the White House for topics ranging from international trade to the maker movement, Bill has appeared on national television with his inventions.

Graduate Student ResearchHasbro Inc Sep 2004 - May 2005Partnered with Hasbro's Nerf and Super Soaker Team and developed novel toy concepts and innovative mechanisms for multiple toy lines involving new ways of storing energy, saving cost, and reducing part count. Conceived, developed, and delivered the Nerf Atom Blaster from concept to market in 18 months. Generated over 100 other ideas, built and tested the top ten concepts including electronic darts with LED's powered by capacitors, laminar flow water guns, slow flying matrix darts, string shooters, and snow guns, tweaked and refined two prototypes, and delivered one concept toy to Hasbro. Composed a Master's level thesis on design process and fabrication of the toy concepts.

Led a team which designed and built a fully automated, computer controlled probe drive system. This device enabled precise 3-dimensional mapping of the magnetic field in a 10^-7 Torr vacuum chamber. Design Engineer, Magnetized Target FusionThe mission of the project was to develop practical fusion energy by imploding magnetically self-organized plasma with a Z-pinch. Designed and built a magnetic diagnostic probe to characterize a beta 1 plasma for the Magnetized Target Fusion project. Received the Los Alamos National Lab Symposium Award for the best presentation in the engineering category. -
Engineering InternNuvonyx Inc May 2000 - Sep 2000Designed and built a variable temperature laser oven for fusing plasma flat panel displays, using the Nuvonyx diode laser, pyrometer, and controller. Assembled diode arrays, invented a water jet wear tester, and provided ideas and solutions to existing obstacles.
