Gapsummit Team Leader
GapSummit is a 5-days summit and biotech competition held every year either at the Broad Institute (US) or at Cambridge (UK) (https://gapsummit.com). The 2019 edition was organised at the Broad Institute in June.A total of 100 'leaders of tomorrow' (students or young professionals) are selected over 1,000+ worldwide applications and are exposed to keynote speakers from Academia - including Nobel Laureate Professor Philip Sharp and Professor George Chruch - as well as leaders of the pharmaceutical, genomics, Agtech and biotech industries. Some of the speakers of the edition included the CSO for Vertex Pharmaceutical, the CEO of Alnyla, the CSO of Sanofi and CDO of Novartis.GapSummit also includes a team pitch competition which spans five months. My team worked on LinkOmics, a platform which leverages on AI to improve the recruitment process and design of genomic-led clinical trials. Working on producing genetically-encoded ratiometric pH reporters anchored on the surface of E. coli to use as pH sensors in gut organoids and study the pH difference between the lumen and the crypts. The design of the project is modular and several pH reporters with different anchors are tested.Skills gained: time-management (as I'm the only person working on it), molecular biology techniques, protein expression, primer and genetic design
Igem Competition
iGEM is the most important international genetic engineering challenge where more than 300 student-led projects compete to solve global issues. I'm part of the over-graduate team of the University of Edinburgh. The team developed PhagEd (available at http://2017.igem.org/Team:Edinburgh_OG). PhagEd is a modular molecular toolkit which uses dual bacteriophages systems to deliver different CRISPR cassettes to re-sensitise antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The toolkit is based on 4 bacteriophages (namely lambda, P1, T4, T7) and three CRISPR cassettes (SpCas9, SaCas9, FnCpf1). I have designed and constructed the SaCas9 part which can be found here: http://parts.igem.org/wiki/index.php?title=Part:BBa_K2330000In the project, I managed the team, designed the overall project and found sponsors, including Eppendorf, IDT and Edinburgh Genomics. At the Jamboree, the showdown event held in November in Boston, we won the Best Therapeutic project among the entire iGEM community, composed of more than 300 teams.Skills gained: Project management, Sponsor-hunting, Leadership, Genetic design, Primer design, CRISPR experience, Molecular biology techniques, Bacteriophage growth and selection, Bacteriophage infection.

Internship In Plant Genetics
Internship in Detlef Weigel's laboratory. Personal project on studying the gene expression levels (RNA-seq) of 11 strains of Arabidopsis thaliana from climatically different regions. Experience gained: growing and maintaining A. thaliana in soil and medium, RNA-seq, sequencing, basic R programming.
Summer Internship In C. Elegans And Nematode Molecular Biology
-One of 20 students (out of >700 applicants) selected to participate in the International Biology Undergraduate Summer School (BUSS), a 9-week summer research program affiliated with the ETH Zurich and University of Zurich.Personal project at Dr. Michael Hengartner's laboratory: in vivo characterisation of the RNA-binding protein MINA-1, involved in apoptosis in Caenorhabditis .elegans. The protein was previously tested in vitro concluding that the protein negatively regulates apoptosis. I've obtained transgenic lines of C. elegans by microinjection (MosSCI technique) and gene bombardment. The lines carried separately the wild-type and knock-out MINA-1 gene (previously obtained from site-directed mutagenesis). The offspring were collected and the apoptotic bodies were counted.Skills gained: growing and maintaining C.elegans cultures, Golden Gate assembly, site-directed mutagenesis, gene bombardment, MoscSCI technique, apoptotic corpses counting, molecular biology techniques (PCR, miniprep, midiprep, gel electrophoresis, cloning, ...).I produced my Bachelor dissertation on this project.
