Retreat Guru is dedicated to making people's lives better and our chosen route for that is to get as many people as possible on life affirming, meaningful, and spiritually expanding retreats. I got to combine my passion for software with my own personal growth and my desire to help people struggling with overwhelming emotions, like I do.I coded, refactored, built lots of internal tools, mentored junior devs, and in general tried to make myself as useful as possible. I reworked the aging behemoth of code to support multiple languages, built a whole new Docker-based development and CI environment, implemented a public API and built an accounting module from scratch (learning accounting as I went).I coached junior developers, led the dev team when we explored a hierarchical org chart and in general made a nuicance of myself articulating things no-one felt comfortable talking about.

PM was a stealth mode startup in the Big Data Machine Learning space. I originally joined the team to lead the user interface and UX efforts. As the company pivoted to have an API in the R language as the main user interface, I studied R and subsequently designed and implemented the product’s API and compiler front-end using advanced metaprogramming techniques in both R and Python. Several patents submitted by the company have my name on them.

During my time at Initech I worked with many customers to help them define and refine the scope of their software products, did requirement gathering and analysis, developed an effort estimation method that actually works, managed projects, coded (mostly Python backend and HTML5/JS frontend), debugged, deployed improved development practices, worked on marketing and business strategies and trained some of the younger folks at the company. Two of those became managers in their own right which made me happily obsolete and ready for the next challenge.

Created, designed, implemented and marketed the anonymous emotional support network openemotion.org. Sadly and despite the best intentions, the project failed to take off.

Was the sole maintainer of EBS Live, a 200K lines project in Java/Spring with serving rates at 50ms intervals to banks and algo traders. I added features, fixes bugs and refactored large sections of the code to introduce unit testing and to cleanup the design.In June 2010 was promoted to become the software architect for the Israeli team working on the initiative to rewrite the whole suite of EBS products. The project stalled and I left in search of another challenge.

The brief period I spent at ZON Networks reminded me of the can be best described as a bootcamp experience. We worked 14-16 hours days on the company's flagship network optimization product under the constant threat of being yelled at or fired on the spot for poor performance.I worked on the interface with the Windows Wifi drivers, and did my share of kernel mode debugging and reverse engineering of undocumented Windows APIs.After another round of layoffs, I was offered a team leader position but wasn't able to accept it due to profound differences between mine and the management's world views.

Co-founded Testuff, a software test management platform for SMBs. Our goal was to improve the lives of testers everywhere who at the time were forced to use tools that looked good in a sales pitch to management but were very inconvenient in daily use. Working on Testuff, I designed the (revolutionary at the time) UX and UI and wrote most of the backend and frontend code in Python.Was forced to leave during the 2008 financial crisis as the company wasn't profitable yet (it is now) and needed cash.

Co-founded and held the technical side of things for Tuzig, a photo management suite that was supposed to be the Picasa before Picasa. Wrote all of the code at the company in Python and wxPython (a desktop UI framework) for Windows.The product failed to take off and we decided to disband the company.

Led a team of 15 developers and QAs working on IDF's long term HR planning software.

Worked on the backend of IDF's long term statistical human resource planning software in C++/MFC/COM with parts in VB6. Was trained and acted as an Oracle DBA, a position that included complex schema design and implementation and various disaster recovery situations. Coded the project's entire ORM layer (this was before there were frameworks to do this).
