About Finn Eckes
I am a first-generation fourth-year BS undergraduate student and researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, specializing in neurobiology, global health, health policy and pre-medical studies. This summer, I graduated from my position as a Diversity Summer Health-Related Research Education Program (DSHREP) program participant at the Medical College of Wisconsin, having worked onboard the Rey Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery. In my ongoing undergraduate years, I contribute to research efforts as an undergraduate research assistant in the Mohr Lab, focusing on defining sensory deficits and brain abnormalities associated with prenatal Zika virus infection in infants. My work involves working with large-scale datasets to characterize neurodevelopment in infant macaques and identify early predictors of neurodevelopmental deficits. My current project is focused on the timeline of CMV acquisition and associated complexities. In addition, I served as an undergraduate research assistant in the Kaufman Lab, which aims to establish kidney transplant tolerance without immunosuppressive medications. I actively managed animal husbandry tasks related to primate care, necropsy and pathological tasks, medication dosing, intubation and post-anesthetic care, and laboratory tasks, honing my skills in data collection, research, and laboratory techniques.Beyond my research involvement, I serve as a Career Exploration Center Peer, assisting advising staff in our mission to help undergraduates in navigating their career paths. I also have experience as a student volunteer in Madison area hospitals and healthcare settings, providing support to patients, families, and staff when necessary. With a strong foundation in research methodologies and laboratory skills, I am eager to contribute to advancements in neurobiology, global, and public health. I am actively seeking opportunities to collaborate on research initiatives, clinical studies, or with healthcare organizations dedicated to improving human well-being.
