Sarah Finnie is the Founding Director of The 51 Percent Project, a climate communication initiative launched at BU’s Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS). Her ongoing research investigates barriers and accelerators to large-scale climate action, including stakeholder engagement among citizens, employees, and teams. The 51 Percent Project won an Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) 2022 award. Finnie advises the Graduate Program in Urban Biogeoscience & Environmental Health and is a Senior Fellow for the Impact Measurement & Allocation Program (IMAP) at BU. She co-directed "Data and Misinformation in an Era of Sustainability and Climate Change Crises" (aka "Climate Lies"), a joint research program with IGS, the Hariri Institute for Computing, and the College of Communication. Finnie serves on the inaugural Advisory Board of the Planetary Health Alliance at Johns Hopkins and is an active committee member for the upcoming Annual Meeting 2025. She serves on the boards of ecoAmerica; Audubon Connecticut-New York; Boston Harbor Now; and the Princeton 78 Foundation, which supports undergraduate service projects internationally. She is a judge for the Bow Seat Ocean Awareness awards contest. Finnie began her career at The New Yorker and continued at The Atlantic and at iVillage, where she was the launch content director. Publications include The Atlantic, HuffPost, and mindbodygreen. B.A., Princeton University, English; M.A., Middlebury College Bread Loaf School. Finnie was the founding partner of WeSpire, a B Corp whose behavior-change platform is used at S&P 100 corporations to engage employees on sustainability and other purpose-driven initiatives.
