About Fiona Burrows
Hello my name is Fiona Burrows and I am currently an accredited clinical vascular scientist working in the north west of England hospitals investigating vascular disease with ultrasound.working as a post-doctorate research associate, conducting research into multi-electrode brain imaging for commercial use; this follows on from PhD where I was imaging oxygenation and haemodynamic changes in mouse models of ischaemic stroke. I have gained a wealth of experience in the preparation of a number of academic and non-academic literature. I also have an eclectic array of lab based skills including in vivo surgery, optical imaging spectroscopy setup and data acquisition, histological and immunohistochemical application, imageJ analysis and finally an intimate knowledge of MATLAB computational programming analysis software. In addition to conducting research, I have written a published journal manuscript, research documents, conference abstracts, and have been involved in the preparation and submission of a research grant. I have undertaken graduate teacher training and successfully applied this to assisting in medical and life sciences undergraduate and medical practical examinations and exam marking. I am a hard-working, dedicated and committed individual who ensures that everything is completed to the highest standard. I am also able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and maintain a positive attitude at all times.
Listed skills include Immunohistochemistry, Cell Culture, Pcr, In Vivo, and 26 others.

The project required me to work independently on my own experimental design and implement skills learnt from my degree but also to learn new skills within an academic lab based setting. Skills learnt included; primer design, PCR, gene sequencing, BLAST database use, cell culture, aseptic techniques, protein extraction and purification, sequencing analysis.Normal patient DNA was compared to a muscular dystrophy patient DNA to identify any changes within the protein sequence of two collagen genes.I did identify a non synonymous homozygous variation in one of the genes I analysed, however, further analysis to see if this variation was causing the protein to malfunction was needed and unfortunately my project did not allow enough time for this.I really enjoyed working on this project as it gave me the opportunity to work independently within the lab, giving my the confidence to know that I wanted to continue within academia research. Summer Placement Student
I managed to secure Manchester University funding for an 8week summer placement in the immunology labs investigating the role of Galectin-3 in the infection of Helicobacter Pylori of the gastric mucosa. Skills learnt included proficient execution of ELIZA based assays including statistical analysis and also FACS analysis preparation and graph reading. Worked independently in a lab based environment gaining valuable experience in lab techniques and working in an aseptic manner.
Community Volunteer
Working in the community with severely disabled children, accompanying the children to weekly activities such as; girl guides, swimming lessons, soft play and day trips. As volunteers we had a great deal of responsibility for these vulnerable children/teenagers, being caring and compassionate but also being able to adapt and deal with difficult or unforeseen events was paramount.
Check Out Assistant
My main role was serving customers on the til as well as dealing with restocking on the shop floor and image presentation. This job required me to have a presentable appearance, be friendly and approachable. I was also able to use my good time management and dedicated mind to the often busy environment retail usually offers. Multitasking and using ones initiative were excellent skills i managed to develop while working at this job.
