I provide orthoptic support for multiple ophthalmologists in private practice, including visual acuity, ocular motility assessment, complex strabismus measurements, binocular visionassessment and color vision assessment on pediatric and adult patients. I also perform a number of ophthalmic support tasks including auto-refraction, vertometry, IOL calculations (Lenstar) and perimetry (Humphrey). Furthermore, I also perform a number of general reception tasks such as typing and answering telephones.

In my role as Orthoptist, I provided orthoptic support to multiple pediatric specialists and four neuro-ophthalmologists in a university hospital setting, traveling between two locations on a weekly basis. I was part of a team of one other orthoptist, dozens of ophthalmic technicians and 18 ophthalmologists of varying sub-specialities. I performed testing of visual acuity, ocular motility assessment, complex strabismus measurements, binocular visionassessment, IOP assessment (tonopen, i-care) and color vision assessment on pediatric and adult patients.I provided support for the public, academic clinic in which I provided teaching to residents, fellows and medical students. I also provided training to newer orthoptists and continued education to the ophthalmic technicians. During non-clinic hours, I ran my own orthoptic clinic in which I provided fresnel prism fits, refractions for prism glasses and convergence exercises on adult patients. I managed this clinic myself by booking my own appointments, contacting the patients and referring back to our ophthalmologists. I also provided ophthalmic technical support to our corneal, retinal, glaucoma, oculoplastics and general ophthalmologists. I undertook a number of administrative roles; managing messages for the pediatric andneuro-ophthalmology services, returning phone calls and booking appointments. Iextensively used the electronic medical records system Epic and imaging system Forum.

As an ophthalmic technician, I provided support to two ophthalmologists. I performedtesting of visual acuity, ocular motility assessment and applanation tonometry. I alsoperformed ophthalmic support by performing perimetry (HVF), OCT (Spectralis) andassisting in minor procedures (chalazion removal).

I have also undergone some training in electrophysiology.

As the only Orthoptist in the Midlands area, I worked independently to provide high qualityservice to pediatric patients. I monitored visual progress, prescribed and managedamblyopia treatment (occlusion therapy), prescribed and managed orthoptic exercises,measured and diagnosed complex strabismus and ocular motility for surgical consult, and provide orthoptic workup for the pediatric patients prior to seeing the ophthalmologist. I was responsible for deciding on follow-up of the patient, with who and when. I also performed visual field testing (Humphrey) on adult patients for the glaucoma care clinic.

I also provided ophthalmic support to a number ofophthalmologists of various sub-specialities, tasks included tonometry (Goldmann Applanation, i-care, tonopen), vertometry, auto-refraction, subjective refraction, nerve fibre analysis (GDx), OCT (Spectralis), IOL calculations (IOL Master, A-scan, Keratometry), perimetry (Humphrey, Goldmann and Bjerrum), fundus photography and corneal topography. I conducted teaching with ophthalmology residents and medical students.

This private practice consisted of three pediatric ophthalmologists. I provided orthopticsupport through vision testing, ocular motility and strabismus assessment, binocular visionassessment, vertometry and perimetry (Medmont).

Children’s Hospital Boston is one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the UnitedStates and is affiliated with Harvard University. The Department of Ophthalmology consistsof 16 ophthalmologists each have sub-specialties in numerous areas of pediatricophthalmology, including strabismus, neuro-ophthalmology, cataracts, glaucoma, uveitis,trauma, retinopathy of prematurity and retinal defects. My role involved traveling to severallocations across the greater Boston area to provide orthoptic support to theophthalmologists. My tasks included visual acuity testing, ocular motility and complexstrabismus assessment, binocular vision assessment, color vision assessment, Lancasterassessment (Hess screen), vertometry, tonometry (i-care), pachymetry (pachymate) andperimetry (Goldmann and Humphrey). I was also involved in data collection for variousresearch projects. I also conducted teaching with ophthalmology residents, fellows andmedical students.

Macquarie University Hospital is Australia’s latest private teaching and research institutionlocated on a university campus, in association with the Australian School of AdvancedMedicine (ASAM). Macquarie University Ophthalmology consists of 29 ophthalmologists,sub-specializing in all ophthalmic sub-specialties. I performed orthoptic support as well astonometry (Goldmann applanation, i-care), pachymetry (pachymate), IOL calculation (IOLMaster), corneal topography (Pentacam) and OCT

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is a stand-alone tertiary service dedicated topediatrics. The eye clinic is composed of two departments: the Ophthalmology departmentand Orthoptic Department. The Eye Clinic services children from all over the state of NewSouth Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and complex cases from outside of NewSouth Wales and the Pacific Islands. I performed orthoptic workup for theophthalmologists, Hess chart screening, perimetry (Goldmann, Humphrey, Bjerrum andInfant), and fundus photography. I also provided independent management of amblyopiatreatment (occlusion therapy and Atropine penalization therapy) and orthoptic exercises.
