As the head of legal and compliance for Veda NZ I was fortunate to be part of a forward thinking, innovative and capable leadership team focussed on delivering quality credit reporting and data analytics services to the credit industry.In addition to being part of the NZ leadership team I worked closely with both the sales and products teams drafting and advising on customer and supplier agreements, and advising on the development and delivery of products and services to market including oversight of supporting collateral. I also worked closely with the customer services team in managing investigations and resolving complaints and was the primary contact for all regulatory engagement, most particularly the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.I left Veda to set up my own practice in light of the government's prioritisation of the second tranche of the AML/CFT legislation as this is a particular area of interest and expertise.

As head of legal and compliance for both a long standing business (Diners) and a new financial services provider (The Warehouse Group Financial Services), I advised on all aspects of the business and in particular on regulatory compliance, managing engagement with the respective regulators as required.In addition to standard commercial legal advice, I was responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing management of the AML/CFT programme, including the preparation and maintenance of Risk Assessments for the members of the Designated Business Group, establishing protocols for monitoring, preparing the written programmes, training staff and overseeing investigations and enhanced due diligence as required.I managed all supplier contracts and MSAs and advised on and drafted as necessary all customer contracts to ensure compliance with the CCCFA, AML/CFT and Privacy Acts. I also advised on all marketing and customer collateral (including the web site) in respect of the new insurance and credit card products the group launched to market in November 2015.I provided training, support and advice to the executive and management teams on legislative change where it impacted on core business.

I provided legal advice and support to the Fair Trading branch with particular focus on the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003 (CCCFA). I was responsible for providing on-going legal analysis and recommendations during investigations and reporting these to the Commissioners. I managed both criminal and civil prosecutions under the CCCFA and Fair Trading Act (including enforcement action in respect of ancillary legislation such as the Layby Sales and Door to Door Sales Acts), including appearing in the Court of Appeal.I liaised with stakeholders including traders, creditors, government agencies and community agencies concerning the development and application of the legislation and represented the Commission at industry and stakeholder meetings including the Ministerial Financial Summit in 2011.I was responsible for providing legal advice and assisting in the preparation and execution of statutory notices and search warrants and the conduct of both voluntary and compulsory interviews.
