Integrated migration issues into the Institute’s programming, which includes research, training and education in the areas of international criminal law and access to justice. Conducted research on the current refugee “crisis” in Europe, with a focus on the Central Mediterranean migration route and reception in Italy. Developed syllabi for courses on the Law of Armed Conflict and International Criminal Law for Justice Sector Actors. Helped to coordinate the 2015 Specialization Course in International Criminal Law.

Designed and taught an undergraduate International Humanitarian Law course. Served as a liaison for foreign universities and other institutions. Edited the Bahir Dar University Journal of Law.

Designed and taught an upper-level undergraduate seminar called Rights and Wrongs in Africa: Practicing Human Rights Law. The class was meant to give students an opportunity to explore the connections between academic issues and professional work outside the university.

Represented individuals in Refugee Status Determination cases before the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Cairo. Managed a caseload of clients, took testimonials, wrote legal arguments for appeal and reopening of closed files, and accompanied clients to interviews at UNHCR.

Drafted briefs concerning criminal issues and their immigration consequences. Wrote Pre-hearing Statements and Motions for defensive asylum and cancellation of removal hearings. Prepared clients and witnesses for individual hearings in immigration court; advised clients and prepared documents for submission to immigration court.

Litigated asylum cases in Arlington and Baltimore Immigration Courts; represented clients in adjustment and asylum interviews, and in individual hearings in immigration court; wrote appellant briefs for the Board of Immigration Appeals; wrote petitioner briefs for the Fourth and Second Circuit Courts. Prepared clients for individual hearings and for interviews; advised and prepared documents for submission to the asylum office, the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and immigration courts.

Assisted with research and writing for a national non-governmental organization that advocates on behalf of immigrants; responded to various immigration questions by lawyers, other advocates, as well as detainees of the Department of Homeland Security; wrote comment for proposed immigration legislation; co-wrote article regarding the Immigration and Nationality Act’s bars on public health grounds.

Researched and drafted model Code of Conduct and Professionalism for refugee law clinics in Central and Eastern Europe; conducted research on various clinics in the United States; edited the Helsinki Committee’s report on pre-trial detention; assisted with translation for African and Middle Eastern asylum-seekers at the Bicské and Békéscsaba refugee camps.
