About Fiona Richards
Fiona Richards is currently pursuing a double major in pure mathematics and chemistry at Colorado Mesa University. She is interested in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, computational chemistry, as well as the study of number theory, advanced calculus and discrete structures. Fiona has been awarded certificates for her high GPA every semester while at Colorado Mesa University. Furthermore, her high GPA has allowed her to get the Distinguished Scholarship for full tuition and to be on the Dean's List.Throughout her undergraduate career she has researched in a variety of fields including biomechanical engineering, synthetic organic chemistry, differential equations, and computational physical organic chemistry. While researching biomechanical engineering, Fiona worked with Dr. Ava Segal and Dr. Anne Silverman at Colorado School of Mines. She coauthored an academic paper regarding their research into the Star Excursion Balance Test and improving physical therapy. Fiona researched under Dr. Phillip Gustafson in the field of differential equations and partial differential equations. She modelled the growing population of the invasive Spruce Budworm in Colorado in order to predict trends in its growth. She presented on this research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium at Colorado Mesa University in 2023.While researching synthetic organic chemistry, Fiona worked with Dr. Joseph Richards as well as other students exploring imidazole chemistry, new mechanisms utilizing imidazole, and the synthesis of (2E,4Z)-2,4-Heptadien-1-ol and (2E,4Z)-2,4-Heptadienal. She presented on this research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium at Colorado Mesa University in 2024.Fiona got the opportunity to work with Dr. Robert Paton and Dr. Seonah Kim at Colorado State University as part of a REU program in the summer of 2024. She researched computational physical organic chemistry, specifically in the field of photoredox catalysis. Her project was designing high-throughput virtual screening workflows for organic photocatalysts. She presented this research at the end of the REU program.Fiona intends to continue her chemistry research career by pursuing graduate school, a post doctoral position, and eventually a professor position at an accredited university.
