About Fiona Bakas

Fiona Eva Bakas, PhD, is a critical tourism researcher with international teaching experience. She holds a PhD in Tourism (Otago University, NZ, 2015), has 20 years of varied work experience (corporate and academic), and is currently an assistant professor at IGOT (Geography Institute) at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. In 2020-24 Fiona was a tourism lecturer at Lusofona University and during 2021-22, she was also a visiting lecturer at Dalarna University, Sweden. Fiona has completed two postdoctoral research positions: 1) 2017-2020 -postdoctoral researcher in a nation-wide project on creative tourism in rural areas and small cities (CREATOUR), at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra and 2) 2014-2017 - research into gender in tourism labour and into festivals and events at The University of Aveiro. Fiona is a member of research group TERRITUR (University of Lisbon); is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Center of Excellence in Food, Tourism & Leisure (Deree, The American College of Greece); is Associated Researcher of the CREATOUR Observatory (University of Coimbra, Portugal) and is a Member of American Higher Education Alliance (AHEA). Fiona also has industry memberships and is Member of Culture for Change (Greece) and Associate Member of NGO Equality in Tourism (UK). Her research interests are: creative and cultural tourism, gender in tourism labour, qualitative methodologies, cultural mapping, handicrafts, entrepreneurship, rural tourism, and ecotourism. As full-time Assistant Professor I am using active learning techniques and technology to teach tourism to undergraduate, MSc and PhD students. 2024-25: Tourism Geography (BSc), Large World Spaces (BSc), Structural Analysis of Tourism (MSc), Research Methods (PhD). I also continue to conduct research into gender and tourism labour, creative tourism, digitisation of the tourism and hospitality labour force, qualitative methods (eg ethnography) and community-led festivals.

In this role as lecturer I am dividing my time between lecturing, researching and heading the new Internationalisation team in the tourism department. As part of the internationalisation efforts, in a team, I am helping to create new Erasmus partnerships, organise a Summer School in Italy, am part of the THInC international conference organisation team and will apply for a COST action and an Erasmus MUNDUS MSc.This semester (2020) I am teaching Sustainable Tourism to 2nd year students (via Zoom), utilising innovative digital tools such as Kahoot!, Mural, Zoom polls, Gdocs and Trello. I also teach Research Methods to 1st year students (in person), introducing the students to innovative methods such as virtual ethnography and design-thinking as well as giving them the basics in terms of qualitative and quantitiave methodologies.

Co-organisation of in-person working group meeting, conflict resolution, participate in cote group meetings, furthering of thinking on migrant women walking tours and managing group dynamics and enquiries.

Postdoctoral research position, working on a three-year project, called CREATOUR, that supports a collaborative research process between participants and researchers and among researchers. CREATOUR aims to connect the cultural/creative and tourism sectors through the development of an integrated research and application approach to catalyzing creative tourism in small cities and rural areas throughout Portugal. During the project, five research centres will work with a range of cultural/creative organizations and other stakeholders located in small cities across Portugal in the Norte, Centro, Alentejo and Algarve regions. My role is to help coordinate the research centres, write reports, articles and book chapters, participate and present at regional IdeaLabs, create regional profiles, organise scientific events and visit pilots.

Using a feminist political economics framework, my research focused on how entrepreneurial conceptualizations are influenced by politico-economic structures and how gender permeates these structures and conceptualisations, hence helping to advance entrepreneurship theory.As fieldwork was conducted with handicraft tourism microentrepreneurs in Greece during the 2012-2013, and hence in the context of a macro-economic crisis, my research also investigates how this external economic event impacts upon tourism entrepreneurship.
