Fiona's approach to teaching links workshop and studio based design and craft activities with practice and theory from other areas- such as anthropology, sociology, cognitive science, movement science. She teaches drawing "as a way of seeing" and a mindful practice; design approaches for printed and multi-media textiles; working with trend; using colour; and research based projects concerned with the generation of ideas and concepts for design. She has also contributed to dance, graphic design, jewellery, furniture, and ceramics modules where her teaching method encourages students to be aware of all their senses and to access them within their creative process.In 2010 Fiona co-initiated a collaborative, multidisciplinary project with RCA Helen Hamlyn and Arthritis Research UK. This inclusive, participatory workshop trail-blazed new footwear concepts for women living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Teams were made up of designers, orthotists, podiatrists and women living with RA. Fiona works with colleagues based in media technology, dance and performance, using motion capture techniques and also photography, video and digital manipulation techniques to learn more about clothing in action: being worn. She is grateful for research funding support from Arthritis Research UK, UCLAN, ACE and AHRC. A related project has involved the collection of materials and objects called 'Sensory Store'. This collection is assisting the research team (and also design students) to explore the potential of sensory interaction with materials, objects and environments, particularly in relation to haptic design applications within dementia care.

Working freelance from several bases including a studio at the Watermark, producing clothing design; colour consultancy; brand development; illustration; designing print and surface effects for leather, textiles and paper products. Clients: architecture practices, textile manufacturers specialising in bespoke interiors for hotels, paper based textile manufacturers, interior design consultants.

Working with various manufacturing companies including footwear. Commissioned as freelancer to design original print imagery for application to leather via digital technology. Also advising on colour, labelling, fastenings and brandings. Featured on DM’s branded footwear marketed throughout Europe and Asia.

Sole responsibility for UK knitwear; close client liaison to develop individualised product ranges, including print. Direct liaison with UK and off shore manufacturers. Developed a new brand identity ‘Aitch Q’ for top of the range product offer.

Own label high fashion knitwear: UK factory manufactured and outworked knitwear for men and women. Ranges sold to Joseph, Joseph Bis, Whistles, Paul Smith. Garments featured in Honey and Vogue magazines.
