This work includes:seeking out news * editing news from CPRE national office * promoting Branch activity and events * producing 'How To..' guides of value to any volunteer * collating consultations online * promoting the website using social media This began as a voluntary role ... but isn't any more!

Choice is a magazine for the over 50s ... a bit like Saga (better than Saga, obviously!), only it's independent and mostly bought by post rather than in shops. I created monthly subscriptions promotions (to persuade more people to buy the magazine by post) and two direct mail campaigns per year. My marketing budget for the DM work alone was a million pounds a year ... but I generally came in above target which isn't easy with such a picky market. I worked with business associates all over Europe, and learned more than I ever wanted to about data processing, Mailsort packages, the finer points of linked spreadsheets... ah, happy days.

I promoted subscriptions (ie purchasing by post) for up to 14 consumer magazines including Choice with its million-pound budget and 2 massive direct mail campaigns every year.This was a time for learning about direct mail, campaign analysis, budgeting & forecasting, office politics ... and so many other things that aren't writing and editing!It was also the time I joined my first band, Things In Black, along with the editor of Rail magazine, a marketing manager and marketing analyst from my own department, an advertising salesman and an editorial designer. Now THAT was fun.
