Hello!! My name is Firdhaus Jaafar, I am born with a diagnosis called “Rethinitis Pigmentosa”. A disease where it affects my vision, as I grow older, it will deteriorate. “Will I be totally Blind?” I am looking for an answer to that question as well. It is uncertain if I would. We are constantly faced with new and unexpected situations that can impact our lives in profound ways. (Unexpected challenges or surprising opportunities,). While my diagnosis be a threat, this anxiety fuels my motivation to advocate for inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities.My life experience drove me to pursue Community Development in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where I learnt about empowering, innovating solutions, advocacy and community building. Through my 3 year Diploma, I found that I am a highly people orientated person, active empathetic listener, and self-driven! Participating in various community outreach projects, I learned the importance of fostering meaningful connections and understanding the diverse needs of different communities. Through these experiences, it shapes my worldview on how resilient strength inherent in people facing various challenges.During my internship at Beyond Social Services, I worked with 15 children from underprivileged families. Involved in innovating programmes that motivates children towards academic and encourage positive character development throughout the 6 months of my internship. Teaching new skills such as Playing Guitar, conducting team building activities that instil positive values, such as public speaking so as to build on their self-esteem. I am a firm believer of “Education is key to success”, especially living in Meritocracy country. Education helps you to climb the economic ladder. Where school helps to develop soft skills. Time Management, Interpersonal Skills, Critical Thinking and so on. Observing the inconducive living environment of an underprivileged child, it sparks motivation on how I could better support them. The joy of interacting with the children, ensuring that they have ample resources and conducive learning space, and inclusivity for them, brings meaning to my career as Social Worker. So, while the question of whether I will be totally blind remains uncertain, my focus has shifted to a more profound inquiry: “Am I prepared to be a catalyst for positive change?” Yes! With passion for community development and a determination to turn unexpected challenges into opportunities for growth and empowerment.
