Head Of Engineering - Player Experience
Current
Engineering Manager
I lead multiple engineering teams across Web and CMS with a focus on fostering collaboration and innovation. My role encompasses managing Lead Engineers and individual contributors, including Principal Engineers and SEiT’s, to ensure cohesive and high-performing teams. A significant aspect of my responsibilities involves unblocking impediments for the teams, facilitating seamless workflow and efficient problem resolution as part of wider programmes of work. My ability to combine strategic foresight with hands-on leadership fosters both innovation and stability in our engineering endeavours.I contributed significantly to the successful launch of a revamped sports product product through managed rollouts across multiple territories. My strategic vision and hands-on leadership were pivotal in navigating the complexities of diverse markets, ensuring a smooth entry and sustained growth in global markets. Beyond the product launch, I spearheaded a departmental pivot towards a supportive BAU model, transforming team dynamics through collaboration, streamlined processes, and a DevOps-focused culture of continuous improvements focusing on DORA metrics, enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring sustained success. One of my key achievements is the successful implementation of a comprehensive framework outlining career paths (Career Zones) across all technology disciplines. This initiative enhances professional development and clarity for individuals for everyone within Technology at all levels, fostering a culture of continuous growth.
Ui Development Lead
I joined Farnell as key member of a multi-million dollar agile transformation program which is expected to run for another year. As part of the transformation, my main role has been to plan and guide the group in migrating the existing technical stack from a 15 year old e-commerce provider to a modern cloud- based infrastructure, with particular focus on detaching the front-end to be independently developed and deployed using modern CI/CD and dev-ops infrastructure. This has involved Director level stakeholder management -- not just within Farnell but also Avent, our parent company -- while working across multiple regions (Americas, EMEA and APAC) and teams as a front-end technical expert and leader, building PoC’s of working infrastructure, guiding and managing third-party providers and offshore teams and showcasing the art of the possible. My work has the customer at its core: working with UX & CR to optimise customer journeys for not only different user types, but also accessibility and SEO, while addressing current negative design and UX patterns and implementing a technical design system to make the front-end robust for future development. As part of the above I’ve had the remit to build a greenfield team of local developers to support the new technical transformation, this has included a breadth of skills including Dev-ops, specialist Websphere Commerce developers, SEiT’s and front-end focussed engineers. Working on helping them develop and learn new skills and integrate into a global business.
Head Of Engineering
With overall responsibility for the Engineering function, my key areas of focus were around supporting the company ambition of doubling from 40 to 80 members of staff. This lead to putting in process around how squads operate, guardrails for performance management, libraries for learning and development, and a complete overhaul of the hiring/ onboarding process.Having inherited three Engineering Managers who had little experience in managing teams before I had to work on creating a peer group at management level to help support them on understanding how best to manage not just people, but also clients, from a squad level to be inline with our tech-as-consultancy approach. We use frameworks like SFIA as a guide to help them measure their direct reports and working with them on how they discuss, performance manage and promote their staff.Alongside Mentoring and managing I moved the Engineering function into a squad model to help facilitate growth plans, which ultimately lead to individual teams gaining increased accountability through ownership giving the SLT (and myself as part of it) more time to focus on business strategy and KPI’s
Lead Interaction Architect
Looking after designers and frontend focused engineers, over 6 squads in the Gaming Tribe, I push to achieve design and frontend coding excellence in a fast paced, agile environment. From earliest concepts and wireframes to front-end implementation, I work with designers to make sure that user-centric design is at the forefront of what we do. Alongside UX, Research, Insights, Engineering and Testing functions, I make sure that thinking is joined-up, and process is being followed so we can produce market leading design solutions quickly and at scale.
Interaction Architect
Looking after the frontend build standards for Gaming’s 4 main products, Vegas, Casino, Poker and Bingo, I was key to making sure that standards, from both design and engineering, were adhered to.
Senior Digital Designer
I’m currently working in the Poker and Bingo product squad within an agile environment focused on the LEAN value tree, committed to delivering high quality, customer focused applications and websites. Working closely with various stakeholders on small to large-scale projects from the earliest inception stages through design to development, release and measurement, I create solutions that jointly meet customer and business requirements, which are 'on brand' and delivered to specification. Some of these include; Poker Rewards redesign which made the rewards system more prominent for Poker players. This saw a +10% increase in revenue in the first week and a +44% increase in its second full week live on site. Bingo In House redesign; There were a set of deliverables needed for the launch, so working closely with Product, Architects, Principals and various other stakeholders thought the business, I took these and created prototypes using a variety of methods such as; Photoshop, Marvel App and HTML. I gained customer insights using internal functions such as our Research Team to gain feedback and facilitated customer focus groups to validate my designs and implementation. I also implemented new frameworks and build steps for development; built the framework of the site and worked closely with the Design team to create beautifully responsive images that work from mobile to desktop seamlessly.I cover all disciplines of design including but not exclusive to User Experience Design, Graphic Design, User Interface Design and Development.
Front End Interface Architect
I‘m currently employed as an Interface Implementation Architect across a breadth of project teams (working on a variety of products) in an Agile environment. My role is to support and advise these teams in how best to achieve their UX needs; with a particular focus on UI components. Technically, this work is produced using HTML5, Object-Oriented JavaScript, LESS/CSS3, responsive methodologies and cross browser/platform compliance at their core. I also work with associated frameworks and libraries such as jQuery, Bootstrap and Fontawesome, and toolsets including automated build steps to produce combined resources and assets, such as automated sprite sheets. I spend a lot of time rapid-prototyping and have heavy involvement in the research and design phase of development which feeds into our core product, this leads me to be the main point of contact for development-based UI/UX decisions as I work towards solid, production-ready solutions that are deployed at scale to millions of customers across the world while keeping the 'look and feel’ of FrogOS consistent in varied environments/cultures at the same time as driving innovation.
User Interface Designer
I am currently employed by Frogtrade as a User Interface Developer; a more hands-on role than just interface design work. I work heavily with code to create on-the-fly designs that are used directly within our software.Being initially employed as the lead User Interface/Experience designer for the FrogOS product, I was intrinsic to the design and development of the platform. While working within a small group of developers I built numerous HTML wireframes, which were taken directly and used to build the platform. The project started in October 2011, with a February 2012 deadline set by the Malaysian Government - who purchased the platform to use as the primary Virtual Learning Platform as part of a restructure of their education system. FrogOS was subsequently installed in all 10,000 state-run schools as of early March 2012. Following the success of the initial roll-out I moved to the development team to continue work on this product in readiness for a UK launch.I utilise and maintain extremely high usability and accessibility standards to meet with business goals and growing online trends. I believe working with intuition is hugely important in the online industry and love working with bespoke education software.
Web Designer/Editor
Over the past two years I have mainly concentrated on brand strategy and producing a consistent marketing approach for our main website, www.ybs.co.uk. This involves adapting promotional content to online media, enhancing user experience, making sales messages consistent across all channels, extensive copy writing and updating the regularly changing sales products – Savings, Mortgage and Insurance accounts. I also work with third party companies to produce effective online sales conversions. Before I took sole ownership of www.ybs.co.uk I worked on a range of websites across the YBS group including; Accord Mortgages, Barnsley Building Society, Yorkshire Guernsey, Yorkshire Key Services and Yorkshire Jobs.
Business Analyst
Lending Support was created from other key departments throughout the Society in March 2006, and the aim was to offer support to mortgage processors with a new mortgage system. The main roles I had were logging faults to our IS department, testing new fixes within our 5 main systems, writing test scripts that could be used to test new system processes, and to collate information into a weekly management report. My previous position was in Lending Risk, where I offered branch support to mortgage processors. I also did CHAPS and BACS releases and chases, additional credit searches to support mortgage applications, fee chases, product reactivation and valuation referrals.
