Following the amalgamation of the AP JNP (Tube Lines) department with its London Underground counterpart in 2018, the planning aspect of the role was transferred to a dedicated team, but many of the same responsibilities remained. As part of the restructure, the position then involved the scoping of outstanding works – identifying labour, materials, and other requirements – so that the team could plan it in accordingly.

In March 2013, during my role as a Fitter 2, a secondment opportunity arose to assist the Escalator Maintenance Operations Team with the management of the department’s 118 escalators in an office-based role; this initially involved the electronic inputting and archiving of paper service records, but later evolved into utilising the same asset management software to plan, schedule and report on preventative and corrective maintenance, acting as the sole maintenance planner.

Upon the completion of my Advanced Level Apprenticeship, I continued the role I assumed during the latter part of the scheme and carried on servicing the 42-escalator remit of the South Area Servicing Team, often as Site Person in Charge.

Having left school in 2006, I enrolled with Tube Lines (a London Underground PPP) in 2007 as an Escalator Technician Apprentice where I studied and completed an EAL Level 2 NVQ in PEO and two C&G Level 3 NVQs in engineering, one of which was escalator specific; I completed the apprenticeship in October 2011 and attained my completion certificate in 2012.
