About Fizza Usmani
I am a PhD candidate in Chemical Engineering, working under Dr. Harishankar Manikantan at University of California, Davis. I am developing a model to study the hydrodynamic interactions of biological membrane inclusions, using 2D fluid mechanics principles. I also have expertise in material science, having worked on thermoelectric material synthesis and analysis during my masters degree, as well as hands-on experience with polymers and silicon rubbers for other projects.I am a quick learner and a team player, and can adapt rapidly to any new problems and devise applicable solutions. I have been fortunate to gain both experimental and computational expertise, and I believe I would be a valuable fit to any team I have the opportunity to join. I'm looking for internships where I can hone the skills I already have and gain some new ones too. Looking to grow as an engineer and a researcher, and add value to the organization as well.

Graduate Student Researcher
Modeling fluid dynamics and transport phenomena in biomimetic membranes• Building a codebase to perform large scale particle simulations in 2D systems• Using fundamental transport phenomena principles for further analysis of the simulations, to study lipid concentration changes due to induced hydrodynamic flows within the membranesModeling interactions of polymer chains with membranes • Adapting a model developed for a 3D system to the 2D membrane world• Developing codebase to model polymer chains in multiple flow conditions• Developing code to determine diffusivity of polymer chains, for various physical conditions
Teaching Assistant
Teaching assistant for Introduction to Chemical Engineering, Material Balances, and Heat Transfer for Biochemical and Chemical Engineers.Led lab sessions (Coffee Lab at UC Davis) and delivered lectures as part of the Introduction to Chemical Engineering class, teaching students lab and data analysis skills.
Graduate Student Worker
Worked as a researcher in Dr. Ahmed Abdala's Materials Lab.Synthesized thermoelectric material nanocomposites with graphene using solvothermal and hydrothermal techniques, and studied the materials using various characterization techniques• Produced tin (IV) selenide and bismuth telluride nanocomposites with reduced graphene oxide for thermoelectric usage, with yields greater than 90%• Characterized the obtained materials using XRD, SEM, EDS, XPS, in addition to thermal characterization via TGA, DSC• Decreased grain size and improved microhardness compared to the pure materials upon addition of graphene, desirable for thermoelectric applicationsDesigned and conducted experiments for optimization of silicon rubbers used for power lines using various fillers• Designed an experimental setup to increase the hydrophobicity of fumed silica by treating it with PDMS• Produced fumed silica composites with ball-milled h-BN (boron nitride) and solution exfoliated h-BN to improve the electrical properties of pure rubbers• Imaged the produced materials using SEM and EDS; tested the thermal stability of the materials using TGA and DSC; determined hydrophobicity via contact angle measurementsResponsible for cataloguing and maintaining chemicals and supplies inventories in lab, and for training new students on lab protocol and use of equipment
