Frustrated by the snail-slow data speed of 2G systems, Farooq decided to move to the birthplace of cellular systems, Bell Labs in Holmdel, New Jersey, to spearhead research efforts for high-speed 3rd generation (3G) mobile data systems. He and his team at Bell Labs invented and won wide industry support for many of the foundational technologies of the 3G standard that provided an unprecedented 100x higher data speed.

After completing his academic research, Farooq accepted a research position with Ericsson in Stockholm, Sweden where he co-invented core technologies for 2nd generation (2G) digital mobile communications. While 2G systems provided improved voice communications and ability to send text messages, they severely lacked support for any decent data communications. At the time, when use of wired Internet was spreading, Farooq saw a future of Mobile Internet and the need for more than 2G data speeds.

Fresh out of college with his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Farooq started his career as an RF engineer in Pakistan where he led design, deployment and operations of country's first cellular mobile communications based on first generation (1G) analog technology. He soon realized that analog technology cannot scale to meet on-the-move communications needs of Billions of people around the globe. He decided to move to the land of wine and cheese to pursue research in enhancing capacity and performance of mobile systems and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from Université de Versailles, France.
