About Flavia S. Ramos-Mattoussi

Dr. Flavia S. Ramos-Mattoussi is a Senior Research Associate at the Learning Systems Institute at Florida State University and serves as the Associate Director of the Center for International Studies in Educational Research and Development (CISERD). With over 30 years of experience in international education and development, she has demonstrated expertise in project design and implementation and assessment of education initiatives in multicultural, post-conflict, and development settings. Prior to her current position, she held various academic appointments, including Assistant Professor and Director of the International Training and Education Program at American University in Washington, DC, and Visiting Professor of International Education at the George Washington University. In addition, she served as Adjunct faculty at the University of Connecticut, and at the School for International Training in Vermont. She has also served as a consultant for organizations and funding agencies including USAID, the U.S. Department of Labor, and UNICEF. She has conducted participant training programs in the United States and research and training in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.Dr. Ramos-Mattoussi's contributions extend to the development and evaluation of literacy programs and the assessment of higher education partnerships worldwide. She is a prolific author, having written training manuals, technical reports, book chapters, and articles in refereed journals. Her research focuses on participatory and action research methods, utilizing visual sociology, life histories, and biographical approaches. She is the creator of The FotoDialogo Method© and has made significant contributions to the field of qualitative arts-based research. Beyond her academic pursuits, Dr. Ramos-Mattoussi is a playwright, visual artist, and author and illustrator of numerous children's books published in Brazil under the name Flavia Sales. Dr. Ramos-Mattoussi holds an Ed.D. in Education Policy, Research, and Administration, as well as an M.Ed. in International Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She earned her B.F.A. in Art Education from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, she brings a multicultural and multilingual perspective to her work. With her diverse skill set and extensive experience, Dr. Ramos-Mattoussi continues to make valuable contributions to the field of international education and development.
