About Flavio Avila

I'm a versatile researcher and machine learning and DSP engineer in a range of fields including audio analytics, deep learning, speech and audio quality assessment and enhancement, NLP, ASR, emotion recognition, Bayesian signal processing, nonlinear signal processing, system identification, speech-based automatic health diagnostics, and mobile and optical communications. Most recently I developed NLP models with Alexa AI, and I previously worked with predictive modeling at Verisk Financial Services/TransUnion and led the audio team at Verisk, focusing on the interplay between machine learning and speech technologies. I have patents in speech analytics, and I also regularly review papers for the top journals in DSP and audio processing. I am a US Green Card holder; I immigrated to the US in October 2018 and then made the transition from academia to industry.In 2012, I received a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Before moving to the US, I was an associate professor at the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ), where for six years I taught mobile communication systems, detection and estimation theory and audio processing. I advised or co-advised four students at the master's and doctoral levels. I'm a member of IEEE and the Audio Engineering Society (AES). Outside of work, I am an avid tennis player.
