With 34 years of experience as project manager and an applied plant breeder, I use all the tools available to achieve my goals, including conventional and contemporary techniques. My career gave me the opportunity to manage complex breeding programs and the chance to interact, learn and teach students, growers and professionals of diverse backgrounds obtaining tangible results. I collaborated and lead the team that created superior cultivars released and planted in different countries worldwide. In many occasions my collaboration helped National research programs to achieve their objectives. I started and/or enhanced breeding and research programs in a wide array of conditions, utilizing my experience, knowledge, professional networking and interpersonal skills. The research program develops varieties of barley (2- and 6-row for feed, forage, malt and food) , winter and spring triticale and winter wheat for commercial release in western Canada. the program scientists reporting to my position include four plant breeders, a plant pathology team, biotechnology and cereal quality laboratories and several contract scientists working in the areas of feed quality and nutrition, disease resistance and enhanced yield genetics. I personally carry out the barley pre-breeding through a large germplasm development project and supervise the breeding programs plus a world class Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) grain quality laboratory and an advanced data management system.I have the opportunity to effectively collaborate with industry partners, commissions, agricultural associations, research funding agencies and other research institutions in order to deliver focused scientific research in support of business plan goals. -
