About Flávio Da Silva Francisco

My name is Flávio. I hold a chemical engineering doctorate and work as a Chemical Engineering Researcher at LRAP/UFRJ. I have solid knowledge in the energy sector, focusing on oil and gas, and have been working on projects held by Petrobras, Shell, and Enauta. In the last 9 years, I have been studying aspects of flow assurance, the use of hydrogen in refineries, water treatment, and, more recently, PVT studies regarding CCUS related to advanced oil and gas recovery. Also, I have been covering and developing studies in energy transition and energy planning (using several Chemical Engineering tools) that consider renewable (wind and biomass) and nuclear sources in the Brazilian context. I worked as a visiting researcher in the human resources training program linked to the Escola de Química at UFRJ in partnership with Brazil's regulator agency (ANP). One of my duties was conducting an annual survey of technological trends in the oil, gas, biofuels, and other renewable energy sectors, done through literature analysis, government data, industry contacts, and company news in specialized magazines/sources. The SD enables the minimization of the use of resources (materials and energy), the generation of waste and emissions, and the possibility of evaluating the system holistically. To explore the potential of this tool, it was applied in three distinct areas: (a) extension of the Water Sources Diagram (WSD) to overcome the limitations involving fixed flowrate problems, loss and/or gain of water problems in systems with one or multiple contaminants; (b) development of Cooling Water Sources Diagram (CWSD), to determine the minimum water flow rate of the cooling system, without affecting the removal of the heat load in the set of heat exchangers; and (c) development of the Carbon Sources Diagram (CSD), which enables the management of GHG emissions in the elaboration of energy planning. Regarding CSD, an energy planning for the Brazilian electricity sector for 2025 was developed considering the increase in the production of some renewable sources and biomass-powered thermoelectric plant. With this, we deliver the SIMSEQ simulator and a simulation scheme in Hysys integrated with Excel® to the customer, where it is possible to solve the same problem using a conventional process simulator.
