About Simon Cooke

Seeking interesting challenges within the technology and entertainment arenas, at director level or above.I don't fit well in a box. Some of my friends call me a "Renaissance Man"... I think I've just got a deep thirst and curiosity about the world we live in - and I read. A lot. I turn chaos and ambiguity into cohesive visions, and thrive on it. I bring a small can of spray-on infectious enthusiasm wherever I go. I care deeply about doing what's best for the team, the customer and for the business. Give me the resources, and I'll happily bring the people along for the ride.I'm part of the Xbox Advanced Technology Group - we make games run faster and better, and help game developers make the best games they possibly can for our platform, while helping to make Microsoft's games platforms the best they possibly can be for our developers and end-users.I'm also an accomplished, highly-rated public speaker, and have spoken at GDC and many Microsoft Games Technology conferences. I also run Xfest, Microsoft's premiere game developer technology conference. Some things that would definitely get my attention:* Directing feature films, writing/running TV shows, writing feature films.* Feature film and television development, production, and portfolio curation.* Starting a videogame/film company. (I'll even bring along a cadre of top-notch engineers, producers, artists and designers along for the ride).Talk to me.

  • Microsoft
Senior Software Development Engineer, Xbox Atg
    Microsoft Sep 2009 - Aug 2019
    Redmond, Washington, Us
It's hard to describe what I do in ATG concisely because it's always changing. I wear many hats, and use my very broad knowledgebase to tackle swathes of interesting problems. My day-to-day? Solving tough technical problems for game developers, helping them to get their games across the finish line on Xbox. It's much more than that though.Since arriving at ATG, I've:* Worked across divisions inside Microsoft to give birth to the HDR Gaming Interest Group (HGIG), in conjunction with Sony Interactive Entertainment, LG Electronics and Vizio. * Been involved in the launch of every Microsoft entertainment release since I got here (Xbox One X, Xbox One, Xbox TV apps, Kinect, Windows Phone, Windows 8)* Developed sample code, wrote whitepapers, and worked closely with the platform team to ensure we're doing right by our 3rd party developers* Wrote and delivered some very highly rated talks to large audiences at a variety of world-wide conferences, including Xfest, Gamefest & GDC.* Ran a number of conferences (5 from end-to-end, and several running tracks) - including VP level recognition for my hard work from Marc Whitten (CVP, Xbox)* Worked on Top-Secret projects* Wrote and assembled media and developer-facing PR/Q&A material for execs, leadership teams and speakers* Solo disclosed developers on technical/business matters for unannounced secret platforms* Flown around the world to help developers ship by providing technical help, optimization and (when necessary) business/policy help, in places as far flung as Milan, Madrid, Montreal and Maryland. (May also have visited places without M's in their name).* Helped launch Xbox One in China* Designed and implemented from end-to-end, solo, two of the best conference apps on Windows Phone - Gamefest Assistant and Microsoft @ GDC, whose UI designs have since been used as a model by several teams at Microsoft.

    Microsoft Oct 2014 - Jan 2015

Similar to just being an engineer in Xbox ATG, except with people to manage.Short lived? Sure. Microsoft re-orgs internally with high frequency. Sadly, in the new organizational structure, they're aiming for something flatter - which means that my lead gig was only temporary.Still, with over a decade of people-management experience, it's no skin off my nose. It's not like I've not ridden this rodeo before ;-)
