About Flip Schrameijer
1966-1967: worked as a conscientious objector as an assistant creative therapist in a large state mental institution. Studied general theoretical sociology from 1969 to 1974 at Amsterdam University and was greatly inspired by the great German sociologist Norbert Elias. Worked from 1974 through 1975, as a medical sociologist at the Institute for General Practitioners at same university. Played a significant part in the 'anti-psychiatry' movement from 1974 until well into the eighties, striving to ‘humanize’ psychiatry, for a better legal position, safeguards against force, curtailment or hazardous forms of treatment. Was employed by the city of Amsterdam in the mid-eighty’s to help & design the ‘Amsterdam model’: a shift of care away from institutions towards the community, meanwhile down-scaling institutions. Involved in a wide variety of mental health issues from 1978 to the present. Apart from being a 'one novel novelist' (Buiten adem, Prometheus, 1992) wrote books on mental health and respectively AIDS, unemployed youth, ethnic minority’s, women, mental health policy, schizophrenia and autism. Was project manager of a large research project into mental health problems of cancer patients commissioned by the Ministry of Health. Self-employed from 1996 to present as a writer and researcher. Wrote 2 books about the problems and treatment of disturbed juvenile delinquents and 4 on the treatment of autism and the policies of an autism center. A book about the idea’s and treatment of schizophrenia over the past 25 years, centered around the Amsterdam Adolescent Clinic (2005). Republished in 2007 as ‘Hoe te leven met schizofrenie’. (How to live with schizophrenia; Olympus). Did research and consultancy in the fields of work disability, education to deaf, mentally disabled and autistic children, juvenile delinquency and the internal communication of a large mental health organization.Specialties: mental health, effect-research, autism, schizophrenia, writing
