Collaboration | GAINS | Mercury pollution control technology | Industry | Co-benefitsAs the pandemic limited my access to the laboratory for the materials science part of my thesis (see below), I took the opportunity to delve further into policy modelling. What started as a 3-month stay at IIASA, became a 12-month University of Leeds - IIASA collaboration and a relocation to Laxenburg, Austria. I am now working with the multi-pollutant policy model GAINS to explore scenarios of future mercury emission and cost-effective future mercury control.My tasks include:* Update of current and future control technologies for mercury across all emission sectors in GAINS* Representation of the impact of PM and SO2 control on Hg abatement* Collection of cost data on mercury-specific emission abatement technologies, enabling cost-effectiveness calculations

Independent research | Proposal writing | Project management & Covid-19 mitigationMy PhD project explores mercury pollution control on two scales - the chemical and policy scale. * The molecular scale: Part I explores the chemical properties of manganese - green carbon composite sorbents as mercury filters for industrial flue gases. Through laboratory synthesis, systematic literature review and advanced X-ray absorption analysis (XANES), I explored different types of green carbon feedstocks (coffee grounds, rice husk, oak wood) and synthesis methods influenced the oxidation state of the manganese oxides.* Part II of my PhD looks at mercury pollution control on a much larger context, exploring the applicability and cost of implementing novel filter materials, alongside a host of other mercury abatement options, across different industrial emission sources. What role will such mercury-specfic control technologies play within the UN Minamata convention to reduce mercury emissions? To answer this question, I am developing scenarios of future mercury control options with the GAINS model, using my insights from Part I and literature research.

Project: Sustainable water purification using engineered bio-productsResearching interactions between heavy metals and engineered bioproducts like biochars, with a special focus on precious metals like gold, and the pollutant mercury. We used a wide array of methods, ranging from wet chemical extractiosn to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and synchrotron methods (XANES, EXAFS) to understand the samples.

Worked in stable isotope lab, preparing and conducting measurements on the light stable isotopes H, C, N, O and S on the IRMS. Measurements included a range of environmental and geological samples, such as carbonate (CO2), pyrite and others in the context of paleo-climate research.
