What Design Can Do celebrates the power of design and its problem-solving abilities. This two-day event in Amsterdam exposes design as a catalyst of change and renewal and a way of addressing the societal questions of our time. With a lineup of international speakers from all design disciplines, What Design Can Do will be the platform for designers to manifest the social potential of their profession. Together with the audience, the speakers will discuss alternative strategies for the future. Participants will be stimulated to come up with their own answers and ideas. This makes What Design Can Do an activist conference, the outcome of which will be published in a book compiled on the spot and presented at the end of the conference. What Design Can Do is a cross-over between design disciplines – from architecture to product design, from graphic design to fashion design – as solutions for today’s challenges generally demand a multi-disciplinary approach. As a producer I was responsible for all communication + organisation concerning our guest speakers, production of the side/vip program and project coordination of the break out sessions.

Exhibition Producer

Arnhem Mode Biënnale

Arnhem

The fourth edition of Arnhem Mode Biennale was named Amber and from 1 June until 3 July we searched for her true identity. To personify a phenomenon as multilayered and complex as fashion is not without its complications, but considering the traits we normally associate with fashion, it is perhaps not so farfetched. Fashion is mysterious and seductive, touching our hearts by creating the illusion of an alternate world. As an immediate reflection of the society we live in, fashion shapes our identity. To get to know Amber, is to learn more about yourself. Hosted in an old industrial plant, the main exhibition focused on fashion’s aura through the vision of international designers such as Prada, Maison Martin Margiela, Rodarte, A.F. Vandevorst and Damir Doma. What does the alternate world created by the designer consist of? The exhibition peeled away the layers, isolated them and presented them as visions on their own. Each designer was asked not only to show a selection of garments but also to design their ‘habitat’: an installation that constituted a universe dreamt up by its creator. The result was an exhibition that focused not only on fashion as a collection of garments but on the infinitely larger world fashion inhabits. As an exhibition producer I was responsible for the project management of the individual installations of several international designers like Damir Doma, Suno, Siki Im, Patrik Ervell, Threeasfour, And Beyond. My responsibilities included communication, research, concept guidance, planning, budget, execution and styling.

Arnhem

Staged every two years, the Arnhem Mode Biënnale shows state-of-the-art fashion design at the international level. Its third edition will take place between 6 June and 6 July 2009. Dutch fashion will be represented by Viktor & Rolf, Spijkers en Spijkers, Klavers van Engelen, MATTIJS and Iris van Herpen. Among the international participants are newcomers Comme des Garçons, Christopher Kane, Rodarte and Thom Browne, and the programme features such fashion labels as Lanvin, Jil Sander, Maison Martin Margiela and Hussein Chalayan. A total of over eighty national and international fashion designers will cooperate in the exhibitions that have ‘SHAPE’ as this year’s central fashion theme. SHAPE, the theme for this third edition, is a celebration of fashion in its three dimensional glory. The programme comprises a major exhibition, satellite exhibtions, lectures, catwalks, tours, workshops and a symposium. Over 80 fashion labels, international and Dutch, are featured in the event. As an event producer I was working on the organisation of all kinds of events, public as well as business events, with lectures, presentations, tours and fashion shows such as ArtEZ Graduation & Young Shape Show.
