Florence L Marlow Email and Phone Number
Dr. Marlow has a broad, interdisciplinary background in cell, molecular, developmental biology, and genetics. For more than twenty years, she has taken advantage of the strengths of the zebrafish system. As a graduate student at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Marlow studied the cellular and genetic regulation of cell polarization of moving cells during gastrulation. In her Ph.D. thesis work, Dr. Marlow used genetic and molecular genetic epistasis approaches to identify novel components of the planar cell polarity pathway in controlling specific cell behaviors underlying morphogenesis during gastrulation, and later during migration of the faciobrachial motor neurons. As a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Marlow investigated polarity in oocytes and maternal regulation of early embryonic development. Dr. Marlow collaborated on concurrent four-generation maternal-effect and ovary histology screens to identify vertebrate genes essential to oogenesis and early development. Dr. Marlow is currently co-director of the Development, Regeneration, and Stem Cells (DRS) graduate training area at ISMMS. Dr. Marlow has graduated PhD and MSTP students, and has mentored masters’ students, all of whom are currently in postdoctoral positions, working in industry, or pursuing their Ph.D., and seven undergraduates who are pursuing medical and/or graduate education. Dr. Marlow has also mentored several postdocs who continue to work in various research careers, ranging from teaching to senior research positions in academia and industry. Dr. Marlow previously directed the Developmental Neuroscience and Topics in Development and Disease courses, taught in Molecular Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Foundations of Medicine, Pillars of Biology, Responsible Conduct in Research, Signal Transduction, and other courses at Einstein. At ISMMS, Dr. Marlow is the Director of the Embryos, Genes and Development course, and taught genetics in the Systems Biomedicine course. Dr. Marlow was the scientific director of the Einstein Zebrafish facilities for eight years and has extensive experience managing the fish facilities and colonies, and in coordinating and directing core services, and collaborative projects. Dr. Marlow is the scientific director of the zebrafish facilities at ISMMS and is the director of BioEYEs NYC. Research in the lab applies molecular, genetics, cell biological and biochemical approaches to decipher the mechanisms that establish the germ line and maintain polarity, function, and fate in oocytes and in neurons.
