During this internship I learned how to communicate my theoretical knowledge, gathered during my studies, to the patient in an understandable, clear manner and to analyze each prescription's correctness with regard to posology and patient-specific interactions.I also gained more knowledge in how to make various magistral preparations (capsules, creams and ointments, suppository, eye and ear drops) secundum artem.

During this one-month internship I had the opportunity to learn more about the different aspects at a hospital pharmacy such as clinical pharmacy, clinical trials, total parental nutrition, chemotherapy and cleanrooms, (non)sterile preparations and distribution. During the clinical pharmacy part, there was also the possibility to go front-office at the geriatric department. There we performed medication reviews of more complex, polypharmacy patients in such a way to optimize the patient's therapy. In these medication reviews, we focused on significant drug-drug interactions, adverse drug events, medication errors, START/STOP criteria and GGG (i.e. effective, safe and efficient use of the medicine).At the clinical trial departement I was able to get an idea of how clinical trials work in practice, which parties are involved, what their specific tasks are and which documents are essential.

Topic : ‘The analysis of biomarkers of psychoactive pharmaceutical use in influent wastewater with a high-throughput 96-Well Elution Protocol : Optimization, validation and application.’During this internship I gained profounded knowledge in analytical techniques such as LC-MS/MS (QqQ) and SPE and learned more about the different aspects of method development. I also gained more epidemiological knowledge on the consumption of opioids, antidepressants and drugs of abuse in Belgium and worldwide.
