Mukisa Foundation is an NGO based in kampala uganda ,it was established in January 2006 to empower families who have children with special needs so that these children can lead purposefull lives to their full potential through a child centred 360 model that includes Health,Education, Family Empowerment, Capacity building, Advocacy and Awareness programs. Mukisa is also involved in changing perceptions of the communities about disabilities.Many people in Uganda still believe that disabilities are as a result of witchcraft,bad omen,punishment for a sin parents should have commited which results into stigma ,neglect and abuse for children with special needs.'Mukisa means blessing in one of the local languages and our message is that every child is a precious gift,worthy of love and dignity. Mukisa Foundation has outreaches in Luwero,and Bussi Island in order to take the much needed services closer to the children that need them.Florence created Dawn children's centre in 2008, which is an Inclusive daycare, kindergarten and primary school where children with special needs and those without can have fun,learn and flourish to their full potential. There is a team of physios,occupational and speech therapists that work with the children through out the day and a number of carers and teachers to make sure that every child's need is met.She also founded and champions the Special Children's Forum which is a platform for organisations and like minded individuals to network and build a stronger voice to articulate issues concerning children with disabilities. The forum supports members with resources, knowledge and they together create the much needed awareness and advocacy programs with the aim of building a safer and better Uganda for children with disabilities. Florence is a board member of the CRANE Network and in the Ministry of Gender of the Buganda Kingdom.
