Master Degree StudentSkuldtech Feb 2007 - Aug 2007Région De Montpellier, FranceConservation program of 2 endemics Polynesian bird species (Polynesian ground dove: Gallicolumba erythroptera erythroptera and Tuamotu Kingfisher: Todiramphus gambieri niauensis) in partnership with The Polynesian Ornithological Society, a.k.a. « Manu ».The Polynesian terrestrial avifauna counts only thirty two species. However, this poverty masks a rate of high endemism. Indeed, twenty species of terrestrial birds on thirty are listed on the “Red List” of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). In this fragile ecosystem, tourism in French Polynesia increase and it became necessary to set up strategies of conservation and Polynesian regional planning.Focused on the analysis of the populations of Tuamotu Kingfishers and Polynesian ground-doves, this study allowed by molecular approaches, to develop a molecular sexing method able to confirm or cancel the ground data. Moreover, an approach of DNA microsatellites genotyping of the Tuamotu Kingfishers’ population revealed an extreme case of low genetic diversity being assimilated to genetic purification. These studies are used to the establishment of conservation programs and regional planning.

Master Degree StudentIfremer Feb 2006 - Aug 2006Région De Montpellier, FranceSurvival capabilities evaluation of peneid shrimp against vibrio infection: Gene expression analysis of antimicrobial peptides.Shrimp are a major component of world aquaculture. However, infectious pathologies are emerging daily, which affect penaeid shrimp species cultured worldwide. This is a major threat on this industry. We have focused this study on shrimp antimicrobial peptides, which are believed to be key components of innate immunity. Novel peptide sequences were identified in the Litopenaeus stylirostris, L. vannamei and Penaeus monodon shrimp species by using the tools of computational and molecular biology. Expression of antimicrobial peptides was analysed in L. stylirostris at different differentiation state (adult and post-larvae). Clusters of genes were identified which are able to discriminate shrimp strains from distant origin, or with different health capabilities when confronted to a Vibrio penaeicidae infection. The final objective of this study is to contribute to the development of bioassays that could be used for evaluation of shrimp immune capabilities in view of genetic selection at different stage of the production. Besides, such a bioassay could be used to evaluate the effect of feeding and/or immunostimulants on the animal immune system.
