I am a German orthopaedic and trauma surgeon and prehospital emergency physician currently working for Robert Koch-Institut's ZIG 3 Preparedness and Operations Support Unit as emergency medical response advisor and as part of the German Emergency Medical Teams National Focal point.I am also holding a Master in Disaster Medicine (EMDM).Before this I have been working as a missionary doctor in Papua New Guinea. Together with my wife who is also a medical doctor we were working in Gaubin Hospital on Karkar Island in Madang province. There are approximately 70.000 people living on the island and we were providing medical care for them including emergency surgery such as appendectomy and C-sections, emergency medicine and in hospital care of acutely sick children and adults as well as obstetric care together with the local midwives and nursing officers. Before coming to PNG I had my own private practise as an orthopaedic surgeon in Germany. I was trained in orthopaedic and trauma surgery at the Theresienkrankenhaus Mannheim, the Kreiskrankenhaus in Heppenheim and the Atos Klinik Heidelberg. My medical career started in the Department of Accident and Emergency of the Hirslanden Kliniken Bern in Switzerland after finishing medical school at the University of Heidelberg.
