About Flor Isabel Serna

I love to synthesize information (data, experiences, finances, etc.) to create actionable solutions for businesses. Here's what people have to say about my work:"Flor creates structures that work and leads the change management process. Flor has a strong sense of organization and detail. She designs systems and guides the team on how to use the systems.""Members of [the team] believe that she could be in the top 10-15% of COOs. With more years of experience, she will gain the situational understanding necessary to be in the top 5%.""Flor is strong at perspective taking and has a high level of critical thinking. Flor listens and does not assume. When there is a power difference or disproportionate sharing of privilege, she retells what she hears in a way that is accurate. She does not just end at being an active listener. Her empathy comes with action." Here's a bit of how I got there:I'm a musician-turned-audio engineer-turned-entrepreneur-turned-operations leader. In 2014, after having worked as a the only woman audio engineer at a recording studio, I founded Electric Girls. What started as just a handful of girls building circuits together after school has grown into a sustainable organization to work with over 1,000 girls a year in the greater New Orleans area through weekend workshops, in- and out-of school classes, summer camps, and competitive robotics teams, all with the mission of building girls' confidence and capabilities by engaging them through STEM. I served as Electric Girls' executive director for five years, leading its quick and strategic growth, building its extensive and strong community, bringing in over $1.5M in revenue, and managing a $500,000 budget and a team of 15 employees.Through 2020, I led 4.0 as Chief Operating Officer to to move cash, coaching, curriculum, and community to a large pool of diverse talent who are ready to redefine "school". I wore many hats, but you'd often find me analyzing and presenting financial data to the finance committee, defining the research strategy alongside university partners, or automating processes in Salesforce to make the team's work more streamlined. You'd also find me redesigning systems and structures that are inefficient, inequitable, or both.Outside of my professional work, I volunteer with small and medium-sized non-profit organizations to set up their finance, operating, and fundraising systems. Most of all, I like to spend my free time where my professional career got its roots - by playing and recording music!
