About Jeff Flowers

I am fascinated by the intersection of art, science, and technology. One of my earliest memories are of watching NOVA and seeing an advert for Edward Tufte’s Data Visualization. It was this moment that I made the internal connections between the aesthetics of data representation as an integral component towards true understanding.My formal training has been in the sciences (Chemistry). I feel that the goal of science is to provide the necessary framework to allow for inquiry that ultimately results in discoveries of a pragmatic nature. My physical sciences background has provided me with a number of skills that I have since been fortunate to be able to apply towards challenges that are more social in character. Teasing meaning out of information requires the proper tools. This is why I am quick to embrace novel technologies that extend my reach and allow for new insights. The best technologies though are those that amplify all our individual potentials and push us forward collectively.

In additional to creating engaging lessons, my greatest contribution to my students is in my leveraging of innovative technologies - sensibly, and with an eye towards systems level thinking. Intelligent systems that scale offer the best chance of achieving lasting effects. As a long time proponent and active contributor to multiple open source projects and communities, I know that the best systems are open source solutions. Open source rather than proprietary tools have had an incredible track record within the valley, and beyond, for the past forty years. I see no reason to limit myself and make use of the tools available and modify those to my particular needs.
