Principal Software Engineer

Redmond, Washington, Us

As Principal Software Engineer, I majorly lead infrastructure efforts, like FastDataPipeline, Campaign DB (OLTP), Report DB(OLAP), NRT, Datalake, Kubernetes etc. I also lead feature projects. I lead a 20-dev team from UI to backend, working with PM, UX Designer, Legal and partner dev teams delivered a feature under tight schedule. I research new technologies and influence leadership team for long term planning.I designed and implemented an internal streaming process system (aka FDP) from scratch as no existing technologies work at our scale. I grew it to a crucial role in Ads org. Tens of team’s thousands of topics/jobs running in FDP. FDP is like a simple Spark + Kafka, all in one binary to simplify operation process. The computing framework supports adaptive partitioning to avoid hotspot. It has runtime code generation for better performance. The message queue supports multiple-topic transaction. It has E2E exactly once guarantee, compared to Kafka which only has idempotent producer support, FDP significantly simplifies the dedup logic in consumer side. Cross-region sync replica is supported in selected clusters with zero data loss guarantee in case of one region is down. Some result highlights:- Process and send report data to Report DB (hundreds of SQL Azure databases). Compared to legacy system, latency is reduced by 10x with only 1/3 machine cost, storage cost is saved by 500x.- Extract advertiser changes from Campaign DB (hundreds of SQL Azure databases), process and send to Ad Delivery Engine (hundreds of machines globally). Compared to legacy system, DB Extraction improved 5-6x, Ad Delivery Engine time saved 64%, E2E latency reduced from 8-10mins to 2-3mins, survive one region failure with zero data loss, data retention period (for debug historical data) increased from 2 weeks to 6 months, saved 88% hardware cost.- Reduced one daily pipeline from 18+ hours to 30mins.- Reduced 90+% of live-site incidents of the team. Zero data quality issue.

Senior Software Engineer

I worked in BingAds China team as the Tech Lead of Reseller Center Project. My team grew CN demand from 9M keywords to 31M keywords in 2 years and contributed to the 140% RPM growth in FY15. I also made many 10x improvements throughout the system from UI to backend, UI is fully refreshed with Google parity look-and-feel and UI keyword grid query performance was improved by 4000X (from 2.5k keywords/10s to 2.7M keywords/2.5s).

Jan 2013 - Nov 2015

Senior Software Engineer

Tech Lead of Baidu’s Ad Review team. My team writes distributed systems to review user’s Ad automatically. We own some real time, near real time and batch processing systems. As the Tech Lead, I lead the team to refactor the code, write some software foundation libraries and frameworks, and build a new architecture named AdReviewEngine, which could make the backend team to be a platform hosting all ad review tasks. In 2011, my team reduced the online risk rate from 6% to 0.56% in 6 months, as a result, the whole Ad Risk Control team was awarded as one of the Best Team of the Year at the Annual Party. Later we did some optimize works and reduced the execution time of a batch-processing task from 33 hours to less than 8 hours. We also added a mechanism, which can suspend some important tasks when get alert and resume them at any time without rerun, this mechanism saved millions of RMB from live site accidents. We’re in process of changing the Review System to be Service Oriented and moving some batch-processing tasks to MapReduce. I also worked closely with QA and Ops team to build the infrastructure of continuous integration, and change from heavy traditional software development process to agile processes. My team won the best continues integration team of ECOM in the year 2011.

Build and lead a scrum team in China, working closely with US team to start up a new product named Project Vasari, which is a free “on-ramp to BIM (building information modeling)” tool for conceptual modeling and analysis. Users can download the tool from the web and run it with 'sandbox' technology in less than 10 minutes. The Vasari team is recognized by CEO as one of the “20 outstanding teams nominated by CEO staff for their major contributions to Autodesk this past year.” We got 10,000 downloads in three months from Autodesk Labs (65 percent of users don’t have Revit installed) and 85,000 YouTube hits. I also set up the AEC mobile interesting tech group, which is the pioneer team researches ideas on iPhone, iPad and Google Android phones. I create and management the SharePoint site, write orientation documents for iOS development and preside several seminars. Before working on Project Vasari, I was an engineer in the Revit team, developing platform features, such as AutoCAM, TaskDialog and Ribbon.
